My cat has to go to the vet tomorrow because her rear-end stinks to high heaven with pink rawness around her butt and that her butt is constantly wet and hurts her to touch her. I never noticed until a few days ago when I noticed she leaves the stinky smell where she sits, and I'd smell my comforter and where she sits and think, "Oh god, I'm sleeping in this stink!" I decided I'd keep her in the garage while I wash my bedding and until I get some help from the vet, but now I feel I've made a horrible decision. She's been in the garage several times, but I'm keeping her company and she is SO UPSET. Before dinner I gave her an anxiety med that should fully kick in sometime within the next hour or so. But she's so unhappy even with me in the room because it's almost like she knows she's being forced out here for a reason but can't understand why or for how long and it's really upsetting her.
She's already gone through a lot, she lost her home in the fires and had to be left behind because she ran, and she spent a month out there by herself while I was trying to find her, then she lived in a house with three dogs and five cats that all bullied her and got in her face, then she had to go on a twelve-hour car ride to get to our house. I'm so emotional right now because I hate to see her unhappy. The worst part is my mom thinks I'm being paranoid. She's always, always, always complains about how my room smells, especially in the old house, and now she thinks I'm imagining the smell I'm smelling and I'm overreacting! Really!? After 10 years of avoiding my room because my room smelled and suddenly it's all in my head!? No, when my cat sits down, the smell definitely lingers, and everywhere she sits I can smell her afterwards, don't be telling me I'm overreacting! My mom made me feel horrible by putting her out in the garage, even though she agreed the cat box and cat food needed to be put out there. Well, my cat is eating and pooping in the cat box out here which is great, but she's very upset and it makes me upset to see her so upset. I guess I can never win, huh? |

Hi,
Wow, what an awful situation LiteraryLark. Poor cat. Yes, if they've got rawness and funny smells, well, anywhere really, then yes, get her to the vet and the poor thing has only to endure one more day. The vet will fix it, don't worry. Yes, you're right, a lot of people tend to forget that animals go through an awful lot in their lives, too. More hardships than people in many instances. Good on you. You hang in there too, please, you're not being horrible, believe me. You're obviously a caring mom to your cat and, yes, make sure to keep her comfort and to let her go outside the garage sometimes as well, which I'm sure you're doing. Hang in there, LL! Wow. |

I was able to rescue her with the help of a "professional cat lady" who devoted her time rescuing misplaced cats and reuniting them with their owners. That's a whole story right there, but to have her back in my arms was the best feeling in the whole world. And this is our first photo together: The meds must have kicked in, because she's gone silent for the first time in well, two hours! On the ride up to our new home, it took her EXACTLY two hours on the dot for her to go silent. I had to stand up to see where she is, she's sitting right beside me with a little "What?" from her when I looked at her. Finally, she's silent! I think she'll spend the rest of the night okay. I think it's been exactly two hours from when I gave her the pill...at least they work like the vet said they would! |

Oh wow LL, what a lovely heartwrenching story. You thought she'd passed on that horrible time and then - there she was! Wow. But then...
My gosh, what an epic story. You guys were meant to be. I'm so glad she came back, and the 'professional cat lady' heh. Nice one, she's gone quiet now. Poor little thing. Deep down she knows you mean well, I do believe that. Aw, and what nice photos as well. Look how happy she looks too, looking up at you. :-) She'll come right, don't you worry, LL. Sending out positive energies, healing energies to you both. ((((LL & Evy - Zing!!)))) |

I just put my bedding in the dryer with a 70 minute timer on it. It will probably take longer, but I told myself I'll stay with her until it's time for bed. She's a bit curious right now, exploring the garage like it's the first time for a bit, then coming on back to me for snuggles. I went out for a smoke and heard her, had a bathroom break and put the clothes in the dryer, etc then when I opened the door she was across the room and came running up to me, then followed me back and sat down at my feet. She's still very quiet which is nice and is just happy to be with me. Before the meds kicked in she protested which no consoling from me could stop. Once the meds kicked in there was still annoyance but not as strong-willed, and on my smoking break I could hear a difference from the first smoke break when she made sure I can hear her with a "YOU BETTER LET ME OUT OR I'LL SHRED MY WAY OUT!" to the last, when she just missed me with a "You're coming back, right, Mommy?"
Oh, and at dinner before the meds kicked in, she truly and honest-to-God was so mad she quite literally said my name. I had no idea she can do that, she was pulling out all the meows she could do and this was a new one. If you didn't know it was a cat you would have thought someone was calling my name. It made me want to cry. |

Yes me and the cat lady are good friends, I always tag her on all things Evy and I sent her a letter as a pen-pal type thing in addition to some thank you cards I sent out. |

She found a warm spot by the water heater. I couldn't see her at first but I figured that's where she'd end up being in the end, and she didn't move when I was looking around. Eating, pooping, finding her own warm spot, calming down, all good signs. This is exactly what I wanted.

Nice one LL. Yes, I've always loved cats too.
Let us know how she goes at the vet and whether she's improving. And stay strong too, you've obviously had to tackle a lot of challenges as well. I had a cat once. One night she jumped in through my bedroom window as normal, onto my bed, but this time she had a big dead rat in her mouth and plonked it right onto my bed. I freaked! Bahaha! But you have to love cats - trying to share their food with us :-) |

Evy is okay! Mild infection from not being able to lick her butt because of her weight. Before I moved she weighed 19.1 lbs, her weight now is 18.5 which is terrific. The doctor said losing a pound a month is a good thing. They cleaned her butt with an antiseptic and gave her an antibiotic injection, and then they gave me a vial of powder to spray on her butt twice a day for a few days. I am so relieved but still kicking myself for locking her up in the garage. I did stay with her for over 5 hours until my bedding dried, but I feel so awful about it.

Aw, nice one Lark. And she's all nice and clean and on the mend now. I bet she's feeling better within herself already.
Don't you worry, you had to do what you had to do, for your own health as well, and now you're both in a better place which is cool. No, you're a good caring mother, staying with her all that time in the garage. Give her a little hug for me as well, please. Good on you LiteraryLark, thanks for sharing the good news. Much appreciated, thanks. Sending you guys very good energy from my side of the globe. ((((*sound of chimes*)))) |
