Default Wanting a cat, but I知 allergic to them

I was curious if anyone who is allergic to cats is able to have a hypoallergenic cat.

I love cats and they seem so independent but attuned to their person. It feels very inviting to me to have a cat as an emotional support.

I致e been reading about hypoallergenic cats and was wondering if they really were hypoallergenic.

The suggested breeds that I致e read about are Siamese, Belinese and Russian Blue. The Russian Blue is pulling at my heart. They are so beautiful and their eyes seem to be able to see you.

I did see the hairless cats and they don稚 really appeal to me.

Would anyone have any input or suggestions?

Are you allergic to cats and able to have one of the hypoallergenic cats with no allergy reactions?

I have heard of hypoallergenic cats but I don't think there is really any such thing. What people are allergic to is not their fur but the dried saliva that is deposited on their fur when they groom themselves. If you got a cat that you could bathe maybe every week/month that may help but many cats fight bath time tooth and nail. I'm allergic to cats and dust but I have 2 cats and plenty of dust. My symptoms aren't severe but I get a really stuffy nose so I've been using generic Flonase nasal spray once a day for several years and that really helps a lot. Maybe you could talk with an doctor who is an allergist and see what he recommends. Also if you brush the cat and do a lot of vacuuming that would help. I wish you luck. Cats are wonderful and I couldn't imagine my life without them.

I second what OCD1972 says.

This article breaks it down nicely: The Best Cats for People with Allergies

Have you considered allergy shots?

They do take about 1 year to start taking effect, and it's about a 5-year commitment, but I have found them to be so helpful for my dust mite allergies.

My dad takes a damp wash rag and wipes the cats down about once a week and it has tremendously helped with his allergies. He started wiping them down when they were kittens and they don't seem to mind.

Sidenote: When they were kittens after they got wiped down he'd wrap them in a warm towel and make sure they were nice and dry so they wouldn't get sick.
