Anyone have any experience with Thundershirts for dogs afraid of loud noises. BG is terrified of loud noises. Gunshots, thunder, fireworks, anything like that scares him. I give him melatonin (sp?) which helps some, but if the noises go on a long time he comes unglued. I have some wild and crazy neighbors who love to party loud and long on holidays. Their New Year's Eve nonsense (fireworks, shooting guns, loud music) went on until almost 2AM. Poor BG came unglued. He was a basketcase all night. I gave him as much melatonin as I safely could and he was still freaked out. I'm concerned about the 4th next week. I anticipate the neighbors are going to go crazy.

anyway....

I'm thinking of trying a Thundershirt for him, but they are expensive. I hate to spend the bucks and not have it work. Anyone here ever use one? Did it help? Was it worth the money?

they work on some dogs and not others. trick is you have to put them on before the storm starts. try Benadryl as well....it sedates check on line for dosage. you can try playing music in the background as well. I haven't had much luck with ,melatonin. good luck

He needs a doggie quiet insulated safe room. In the house, with sofa cushions? In the barn, with hay bales? With the soothing sound of the dog pack sleeping piped in.

I'm going to try Benadryl on the 4th and see what happens. I don't like the idea of drugging him but going to try it. If it doesn't work Ill try the Thundershirt

Did you see Seesaw's photo of her dog hiding under the bed when she plays her violin? Her something roommate. I realize its different sound ranges, but maybe muffling or white noise (a fan?) would help. Doggie earmuffs? A little doggie turban Or do you think they are feeling the sound with their whole body?

Lizardlady, some folks are weighing in on The Couch in the Psychotherapy forum, per my request.

Nobody liked my velvet turban idea

They are concerned about the cotton in the ears, but i think thats because they think its MY dog, and ive never even changed a diaper on a human baby, if you get my drift.

Also no one has faxed me blueprints for a doggie safe room - yet.

I keep a radio on in the rooms where my dogs are. If I have the AC on & the house is all closed up, the radio drowns out almost everything....louder radio on nights when more is needed.

Some of the lightning cracks can be heard anyway if the storm is right on top of us but mostly it works.

I am really surprised all this lightning & thunder don't even phase my horse who was just shipped here 3 weeks ago from the Calif desert that has almost no storms. She is an amazingly cool horse.

I tried Benadryl at the dose the vet's office suggested last Sunday. He had drool running out of his mouth the first hour after I gave it to him. Then he was just about knocked out for hours. Oddly even though he was down and out he'd still rouse when it thundered.
Yesterday I tried a lower dose. No drooling and less stoned, but still some nervous

I usually have the TV on in the house. The sound from it doesn't seem to help. My neighbors can crank their stereo up to the point that with my windows closed, the a/c on and the TV cranked up I can still hear their f'ing music. And I live out in the boonies, they are a 1/4 mile away.

As for music/tv to drown out thunder. I live in the lightning capital of the world. We get thunder boomers that rattle the windows and make the walls shake. No music or tv is gonna drown that out. Heck, some times when we are getting really loud boomers even the cats get upset. Funny side note, some times when the thunder is really rockin' and rollin' Mikey (cat) expresses his displeasure by walking around growling at the thunder.

Bottom line is that I haven't decided about Benadryl vs thundershirt. I really don't like drugging him, but the shirts are expensive and might not work.....
