I don't know exactly how we got this cat, but I think she was a stray which we adopted about 12 years ago. My aim was to take the best care of her that was possible, so that I would have no regrets when she finally died.

However in retrospect I don't know if I did that. Towards the end of her life when she was less active, I did overfeed her and she was overweight as a result.

It also didn't occur to me to get her vaccinated, or even wormed. I got some worming medication which I used on her when she had a skin condition, but I think that's just for parasites and other kinds of worms, I don't know if it was for heartworm. I also wasn't very proactive with her health, I just took her to the vet when she had a condition. I was thinking of getting her a blood test or a routine health check, but that never happened. I did get her desexed.

We don't know how she died, she was in her spot on the couch when I found her. It's possible she was bitten by a snake, or maybe she had a heart attack. The vet said sometimes cats have chronic fluid build up which can eventually result in sudden death.

So I don't know if I took the best care of her, but maybe at least I kept her comfortable and off the streets, and well fed. In the end however I feel like I failed her.

I also don't know if she was lonely or not, since sometimes I was not home a lot, or I did not interact with her due to my anxiety. Sometimes I just fed her, and that's all I saw of her for the day.

I'm so sorry, cat. I hope your passing was quick and peaceful, that I helped you in some way in your time on Earth, that you knew I appreciated you.

Anyway, she was a great cat. She was never 100% comfortable around me or other humans, however she would approach and settle next to me on the couch, with her paws on me, and nap there. She liked getting her head scratched and to be pet head to tail. She would purr immediately and leave fur all over me, and make biscuits on my thigh. Any sudden movements however and she was easily spooked and would scurry away. She hated going to the vet, and I couldn't force her into a cat carrier, so I just carried her in a bag or in my arms. When I had health anxiety she was a good distraction, and I wondered if she knew whether or not I was sick. I would ask her if she knew if i had something, but of course she didn't respond. Her job was just to be with me and provide moral support, which she did. I hope I was as much of a help to her as she was to me.

RIP, cat.

I'm sorry for your loss. I have lost a cat too, so I know how it is. It sounds like you took great care of her. Without you, she would have died on the streets years ago.

Hi there I know how it feels. My wife and I had a cat and she had asthma. It was heartbreaking at the end and we had to put her down. On the upside we adopted 2 wonderful cats who makes our life complete even though they can drive us crazy 😜 You’re in my thoughts!

😊

I have a picture of her from 2011 and she looks like a fully grown cat there, so i'm thinking she would be at least 9 when she died.

Her sudden death really bothers me. Even though in retrospect I could've taken several preventative measures such as weight management, keeping her indoors only, and regular health checkups.

Also not knowing what she died of is bothering me, it makes everything seem more random.

I'm just going to write in this thread to try and get things off my chest.

Poor you. I suppose, as with our human loved ones, there is no 'good way' to lose them. The decision to put down a pet is excruciatingly difficult. Perhaps you can take comfort from the fact that she didn't suffer. Genuinely passed gently away. I speak as someone with an old stray cat.

I am so sorry about this!! It sounds like you did a great job in taking care of her!! It is hard when they go. I have lost pets too, and it's painful any way it happens. xoxox
