I had written about my cat hurting his eye.. I thought it was a gate but turns out.. I got rid of the gate and it happened again. I feel it is due to a crazy itchiness on his face that he keeps scratching. I have ordered something for his ears.. I hope will help. I think he scratches his face and gets his eye.
I am frustrated though. 2 months of the year I have to be on this thing called emergency and I can't take time off. And my cat seems to know this and get sick during emergency. Also my cat seems bound and determined to get sick every long weekend. It is as if he knows. |

(((safe hugs)))
I'm sorry about you and your cat. There are some people I know who have declawed their cats, but I don't know how painful that is for their cats or for their self-esteem, if they have self-esteem. Maybe a routine trimming of the nails might work?? Do cats get eczema? Or allergies? Poor kitty, and poor you! (((safe hugs))) I hope the vet can get to the bottom of this. |

First off: DON'T DECLAW!!! See here for info and alternatives.
Besides frequent nail trims, it helps to get a good scratching post. Sorry if what follows sounds like an advertisement -- it's just a story from our painful personal experience. Our cats' first post was one of those cheaply-built "carpet and sisal twine over plywood" jobs from a big-box pet supply store. Not only did Their Adorable Majesties destroy it in six months, one of them (the girl) ingested a loose carpet fiber from it; it lodged in her lower esophagus and stomach and she needed serious emergency surgery to get it out. So we switched to one of SmartCat's posts. Instead of twine, they have sisal fiber, which stays attached better, and no carpet. Well worth the extra cost, and ours lasted three times as long as the prior one. I might also ask what kind of litter you use. We adopted Their Adorable Majesties from a shelter that used clumping litter, only to find the girl's eyes watering a lot. Suspecting the fine "grain" of that litter, we switched to conventional clay litter and the watering stopped. {{{{{ Hugs a-plenty }}}}} to both you and Kitty. Please keep us posted. |

I agree with DSM. Don't declaw.
Personally, I think it is cruel to declaw an animal. |

Just being proactive. I only said that because it was mentioned here:
I didn't mean to assume or offend -- sorry. It's a hot-button issue with me. |

Thank you, and no worries. I just brought up "declawing" because there are many reasons why some people do that; I think it is cruel and I could never do that. But I've known some who do.

So frustrating it happened again. I was late from work tonight and it happened.
I now feel like I am closing in on the cause. So far it has only happened on long weekends. On long weekends I definitely sleep late which I never do otherwise. My cat doesn't get his food. I think this rubbing or hurting of his eye is a maladaptive behavior he has when he doesn't get his food. Also I think it happens at night(darkness) he might not know his lid isn't shut? It never happens when my cat gets his food within a 12 hour period. (normal work day) Well tonight I was late from work --15 hours since I left this morning and I am not sure I got him enough food. He had the eye damage again and it was pitch black in my house for hours. I felt like this had to be putting 2 and 2 together. I got out the automatic feeder dish that I used to do and I set it up to move at 3 am and 3 pm and I put dry food in it. I also gave my cat a large dinner tonight and will give him a large breakfast tomorrow. I hate to do this as my cat is fat already but I feel like I have no choice this can't become a habit. |
