There is no doubt that a cat can make you happy! Owning a pet increases your chances of being happy and successful. I have a kitten too and she knows all my mood swings and emotions. She always tries to make me cheer when I'm down.

We have two kitties, we got our first one about a year ago, then another one this fall, and I LOVE being with them! It's so uncomplicated. That's what I like the most. And they cheer me up or comfort me a lot! I think you'd definitely feel comforted by a kitty.

Hey bpcyclist I found a cat foster manual online for Seattle Human Society. It gives you an idea of the types of questions asked of foster parents. Maybe read through it to get a better idea of the level of commitment involved in fostering a cat or cats. I couldn't find a cat foster manual online for Portland. Not sure why. I'm sure one exists. Maybe if you contact the Portland Humane Society they can email you a PDF of their cat foster manual. Always good to read ahead before you apply online. They also don't screen for mental illness on their foster applications. That's up to you to disclose, I believe. But, you know yourself. I thought the manual would help you determine if it's something you think you can do. Hope it helps.

You already owned a cat so you know his/her needs. Of course it’s easier to take care of if you compare it with a doggie. But, still, you have to provide him with a good environment. You have to provide him with activities he needs as hunting games. They love this part and need it. I’m
sure you already know about it of not, take a look at Jackson Galaxy’s ticks or his videos and you will have a happy folk beside you. :-) __________________ Social Anxiety and Depression. Well, I have come to a big decision. I am getting a Vizsla puppy.
We have had 3 of this breed in the past and I know them well. It will get me out of the house more, to do dog park stuff, and give me some other tasks to do, in terms of all the training required. Vizslas are interesting dogs, if you don't know about them. They are essentially red-haired, Hungarian cousinns of the Weimaraner, though of slightly different temperament and just a teeny bit smaller. Maybe, 70ish pounds for a full-grown boy. They require huge amounts of intense exercise. 2x a day at the dog park, often, when they are young. Otherwise, they will go nuts and eat your floor and shoes and everything else. They are exquisitely sensitive animals and are often called velcro dogs because they must be right beside you or on you, preferably, pretty much at all times. This is just what I need, since I live alone and have no real social experiences at all. It will be perfect Super excited about this. Just have to find one for a decent price. First place I called? 2800 bucks!!! Ridiculous. __________________ When I was a kid, my parents moved a lot, but I always found them--Rodney Dangerfield |

I am glad that you have decided on a dog. Do you now feel emotionally stable enough to look after a dog. I am referring back to your first post. Do you live in a place that has out doors for a dog to be? A friend of mine adopted two different puppies many month apart. She tried this twice but and had to give each dog up. She basically has no back yard. It is a big thing for you to commit to.
If you think that you can do this then kudos to you and I wish you well in your quest to find a Vizslar. |

Anyway, if I become overwhelmed, Jenn and my child will take the dog and adopt him or her. So, I feel safe about the approach fo rthe dog and for the patient. As you may know, I was in the state hospital for 5 years somewhat recently. There is a lab there named Jemma. Jemma's owner did a small study and found that hospital patiients who spent an hour a week or more with Jemma saw a 50% reduction in their need for prn benzos while they had contact with this special dog. I am hoping the same thing happens with this dog of mine.\\I will certainly keep this thread posted, even if I turn out not to be able to do it. __________________ When I was a kid, my parents moved a lot, but I always found them--Rodney Dangerfield |

I am glad that you have thoroughly done your research and having a back up plan. You have support people in place. It is good to know that you will be looking after yourself and your next furry friend.
