Well, I'm not scared of kittens but ...

Having been in a depression for over a year now, I was starting to show some signs of improvement until I had some health issues. I have been looking for a kitten for a while so it's no impulsive decision and I know I'll have to be there for my new friend for at least 15 years. And that's what scares me ... I'm 'probably' going to have some bad days in the near future and I'm just terribly scared the little thing is going to suffer from my depression.

Congratulations on getting a kitten this week! How exciting for you! Of course you are nervous. The kitten will be fine as long as you are gentle and kind with it. Play with it, feed it, keep its water dish full. Train it to use the litterbox. Give it lots of hugs and kisses. Pet it. Brush it. And you and the kitten will be so happy together.

Dear one, I've read that pets can be a stimulus for depressed people to get up and going. But just in case, see if you can find someone to fill in for its care if you're just not up to it. I'm excited for you! How about going to the Pets forum and tell us about the kitty--and maybe even show a pic?

You're going to adopt your new very best friend. You will love each other so much! When you feel depressed, you can cuddle with your kitty and tell it all about how you feel. Your kitty will give you a reason to get out of bed and live. It's not about depression, it's all about love

Aw, yes, a lovely little kitten. Such pure little beings. Happy! 💖

I was just wondering @pliepla. In what what way are you afraid your depression might effect the kitten?

Thank you.

It's delayed by a few days because my order for a scratching post (which also incuded food etc.) was cancelled due to covid-19 regulations. I re-ordered without the scratching post and will go for the kitten when everything has arrived (probably tomorrow, if not on Friday).

It is in part a lingering feeling that I am good for nothing. At times, the idea that I can hardly take care of myself - although some people might argue against it, some days even the most basic actions are a huge effort - takes over and I start to wonder whether I'm going to neglect the kitten at some point. Probably, I will stop taking care of myself before I would let any harm come to my cat, but it still scares me.

Before my divorce, I had goats, chickens and ducks. I was the one getting out of bed to feed the animals and milk the goats every morning and putting them to their sleeping places every evening. Even when things were rough. I think that could be an argument why everything will be fine but on the other hand my depression has become much deeper since the divorce. So I've lost the little confidence I had at my ability to take care of a living creature.

@pliepla

Aw, yes. You'll be okay I believe as long as little kitty's welfare remains foremost in your mind through your most difficult times. I can just hear that little purring in the ear now, such sweet little babies. 🥰😸

All the best pliepla. All the best with your new little family.👍

I've lost him !!!

As I don't have a car for the moment, I had friends driving me. Upon returning home, he was sitting on the arm of the lady while her husband helped unpacking the litter-box, putting food in the bowls etc. When they left after half an hour, I took the kitty upstairs because he acted "sleepy" and I would like him to sleep next to my bed. After that, I went downstairs for a little snack. He was constantly meow-ing so I went up to get him. He was nowhere to be found. But once I was behind the PC again, he started meow-ing again. Going to have a look he ... well, I assume you get the drill. I guess that's why we take cats , it's good for our fitness

Further observation: I've had a rough week cleaning up (a part of) my mess: collecting two months' worth of pizza boxes and softdrink-bottles, broken glasses and bottle caps and scraping dried up rotten fruit off the kitchen floor, just because I thought this was not a safe place for the little critter. Amazing that he gave me the motivation even before he arrived. And he already left a token of our friendship in the litterbox ...

PS: too bad they mixed up my order: I have babypowder-scented cat litter now (I did not even realize that was a thing) ... oh well, maybe it's a good starting point to learn to accept life as it comes.

Baby-powder scented litter?! 😬 That’s hilarious!

Cats LOVE to hide. It’s what they do. My cat would hide from me all the time , by crawling inside my bed comforter to sleep. Sometimes I wouldn’t find her unless I shook her dry treats box. 😂

How about confining the new baby to a couple of rooms for a few days while s/he adjusts to the new home? I do this whenever I have a newbie in the house.

Adopting a kitten is a risk. But life is a risk too. Life is all about taking risks.

Progress made so far: he's sleeping on the bed at my feet, sometimes lunging at my toes in the middle of the night. But he does not accept treats from my hand yet. He is coming closer though. And he's camera shy

I woke up this morning at 4AM with someone purring at 2 mm from my ear and whiskers tickling my cheeck.

He still refuses to have his picture taken though.

Is that one of the most wonderful things in the world to wake to? Having a fur baby purring near me puts me right back to sleep.

Maybe you could catch a pic when the baby is asleep?
