Hi,
I rescued a dog in April. She was never in the house prior to rescue and had little human contact. So when I adopted her, I had to create a good bond, also get her use to the house. She has separation anxiety. If I drive off for 30 minutes, she starts scratching & digging to get out of the front door. She is not a Velcro dog.. I just think she is afraid. Maybe she needs Prozac. |

Google it! I read something online about how to get your dog used to separation by leaving the house for a minute, then five minutes, ie gradually longer times, showing doggie that you always return.

I don't know what a "Velcro dog" is. Our Schnoodle who passed away just this past July had separation anxiety. And there are training techniques that can help with this. But I think in order to be successful with those you'd likely need to employ the services of a qualified dog trainer.
Other more immediate solutions might include getting a crate & helping your dog to learn to feel comfortable being in it. You could also consult your veterinarian with regard to the possibility of getting a prescription for a medication that would calm your dog's anxiety. Our Schnoodle was afraid of thunderstorms. So we had a prescription for Trazadone we could give him when a noisy storm was anticipated. Of course making sure your dog is getting plenty of exercise may help too. As it is sometimes said: "A tired dog is a good dog." And then, getting your pooch a canine companion, might be another way to approach this if that is something you could consider. And these are just the suggestions I would be able to offer. Perhaps other PC members may have other techniques they can offer. But congratulations on rescuing your dog. While I, personally, was content to let our beloved Schnoodle be our last dog, my wife is intent on adopting another one. So I think it's likely that's going to occur. |

My dogs don’t get separation anxiety per se, but my German Shepherd tends to eat very little when we’re away. Even when he’s inside the house one of us has to be nearby at all times when he gets his meals lol
