I had to put my kitty down about 8 years ago and I have two dogs. They are 12 and 13. When they are gone I will not be getting any new dogs. I would like to try a cat again. My husband and I are really interested in Maine Coon cats due to their size and personalities. Anyone want to share anything at all about owning them? I realize this may involve an expense although I did a quick google search and found a rescue that listed a few Maine Coons for adoption. I dont know why they would be up for adoption unless there is information I do not know. This wont be for a few years. My oldest dog is blind and deaf and is very low key and in his own world. My other dog is my little guy but we found out he has an enlarged heart and a cough and I get teared up even thinking of anything happening to him. I just know that when he goes it will leave a huge hole in my heart and I am trying to be prepared with a plan so I dont act impulsively. We plan on buying an rv down the line and cats tend to do better in adapting to them then dogs, plus they have litterboxes.

I have at least one Maine coon mix and he was very friendly when I adopted him from the rescue. He instantly wanted to cuddle with me when I brought him home. He didn’t hide under the bed for a month the way my other cats did. He adjusted very well. He was so incredibly affectionate and friendly until we brought in the other 2 cats and he also got older.
They are called gentle giants. A lot of rescues lie. A ton are good though. The ones I’ve dealt with were not. The one where I got my Maine coon mix lied about his age. They told me he was 3 when he was actually 10. That was 5 years ago. The other rescue I’ve had issues too and one cat died of some disease. He was just a year old. One is fine but then I got another and he has kidney issues. I have spent thousands of dollars on vet bills because of bad rescues. My vet was trying to get me to have the rescue pay for the vet bills. I feel like people who say adopt don’t shop should look at the bigger picture. But it’s anyone’s choice. My own choice would be to never get any animal again except sea monkeys. __________________ Ridin' with Biden |

Sarah, I have a Maine Coon mix rescue. He was about two weeks old when his cat mom abandoned him. I carried him around inside my shirt and bottle fed him. He literally thinks I'm his mom. He is very affectionate with me, but not other people. He also has strong opinions what behavior he accepts from humans and other critters. He will smack the crap out of anyone who does something he does not like. He can be downright cranky at times. On the flip side he loves to snuggle with me. My understanding is that the cranky behavior is atypical of Maine Coons, but his mother was feral and heaven knows what his father was.

Male orange tabby Main Coons are the friendliest cats there are. I had one for 13 years -- the most adorable, loving, sweetest animal ever. They do have long hair so you have to brush them frequently. Highly recommend though!!!!

Hi Sarah. I have a rescue Maine Coon mix. He is the sweetest most lovable little (big) cat you will ever meet. He is all grey and has amber eyes that show more expression than a lot of humans. Our best guess is he was about 7 when we got him, and it appears they must have been tough years. The only warning I can give is be prepared to deal with the fur. It sheds and it matts. Other than that, at 15, daily, he still chases his mouse, bats around his ball, swats at his feather, and just relishes any and all attention. Just about everyone who meets him calls him “regal”. Good luck!

Hi Sarah! My daughter (age 23) just adopted a Maine Coon. He is all black, 16 lbs., typical "Coon" fluffy undercoat w/long shiny hair, and stunning apple green eyes. Beautiful! He is more like a doggo than a cat though! He is very smart, very gentle, and very affectionate. He is also, very chill. He is about 3 years old, and my oldest daughter who works with a shelter, loved him when he was brought in. He had been living outside, no micro-chip, no collar, and had injuries so the family who was feeding him (as a stray) brought him in thankfully. He got medical care and instantly my daughter just knew he was 'different'. He instantly made himself at home, exploring his huge new house, (after traveling four hours on a plane!!! where he was an absolute angel in his carrier!!!) and when I went to meet him he just rolled over to ask for belly rubs! I'm normally more of a dog person, but now I'm sold on Maine Coons. Our "Shadow" is the best boy The adjustment period was nearly zero compared to days/weeks with most cats, and he is so so so friendly. Obviously I'm in love

I don't know a thing about them, except that I've seen pictures, and they are about the prettiest cats I've ever seen.
