Default How to convince loved one they need psy help

I have a 28 year old nephew who is a veteran. In addition to PTSD, he got an initial diagnosis of schizophrenia. He is very intelligent but is resisting treatment. Any "magic words" that will convince him he needs help? He's already had a minor run in with the law.

Hello smsm: I see this is your first post here on PC. So... welcome to PsychCentral.

Here are links to 8 articles, from PsychCentral's archives, that may be of some help, the first 3 by our host Dr. John Grohol, Psy.D.:

Denial is a Powerful Impediment to Treatment

You Can Only Change Yourself

Helping a Family Member Get Help

There is also a book (& a YouTube video) I could recommend. The book is titled I'm Not Sick, I Don't Need Help. Here's a link to a review of the book:

And then here's a link to a YouTube video of a "TEDx Talks" presentation by the author of I'm Not Sick, I Don't Need Help, Dr. Xavier Amador:

I hope you find PC to be of benefit.
