I want to do more for my friend, but I don’t know what more I CAN do.

Some basic information: I have a friend (from Spain) who used to live/study etc. in the UK with me. They stayed around in the UK for several months after finishing their degree to try and find work. Despite months of applications and interviews (and some good qualifications) etc. she couldn’t find a sustainable job and, in the end, had to give up and go back to Spain, where she has been for the last couple of months.

Since then she has still been struggling to adjust to life back “at home”. In addition to still finding it difficult to get a job, she has moved back to the small town where her family lives and is finding it suffocating to live in such a small area, compared to the larger city she lived in when in the UK. She is very well qualified for work in her chosen area, but she can’t seem to make headway with getting to the final stages of getting a job (interviews and beyond). She's pretty down with the fact that she's been trying for so long, but can't seem to make any progress. For reference, yes, she has had her CV/resume looked at by friends/family/others and they agree that it’s fine. She also can’t afford to move to a bigger city to try and find a job there. I can’t help with this either - I don’t really know any Spanish, so it’s not like I can help her find jobs, or examine her applications.

It’s difficult for me, because I think of this person as one of my good friends, but I just feel so powerless in this situation. I want to help, but there’s nothing I can do. We talk almost every day (sometimes a little, sometimes a lot, sometimes seriously, sometimes not), but the affirmations I provide seem so meaningless, even though they’re basically all I can do. I invite them to talk about their problems, but I can’t suggest any practical solutions to what they’re going through. I’m even going to visit her next week and I hope we’ll have fun, but I just feel quite useless most of the time.

Is there anything else I could be doing to help?

Even tho she is well qualified is there a career type center she can hook up with to get leads on jobs in her area? What about agencies that hire out? Going online and looking? Is day travel an option for further away locations? She may have to take a job she didn't go to school for in the meantime in order to move to a location where she can work in her chosen field. Sometimes we have to take what we can get. Being a close friend just keep being supportive but maybe *kindly* bring up alternatives she might not want to hear that could bring her closer to her goals in the future. Idk. My two cents.
