I have a 30yo son that has had several disorders over the past 15 years. He has most recently been diagnosed with schizotypal personality disorder. He has been suicidal several times in the past and is currently in crisis. I have spent days talking and texting him to help him get past these problems. He leads a very troubled life. I'm not sure where to go for my problem. I have also had psychological problems with depression, anxiety and panic attacks almost every day.

I suffer so much guilt after I have talked him through his suicidal times, because he suffers so much every day that maybe he would be better off dead. I have suicidal tendencies myself so I know exactly how he feels. I can't get past the thoughts that I am being selfish to talk him down. I have come so close to ending my own life together with him. A few years ago I was diagnosed with MS and my depression increased so much that I purchased a tank of nitrogen that I had planned for both of us to die together. I still have the nitrogen and 2 face masks connected to it. Please help me figure out what I can do.

Hello NoH2o: Thank you for bringing your concern here to PC. I see this is your first post. Welcome to Psych Central.

I'm sorry your life & your son's life have come to such a desperate place. It's just my personal opinion. Perhaps other PC members will feel differently. But I don't feel it would be appropriate for me, or anyone else here on PC, to be offering you advice on such a serious & potentially final subject.

I believe what you should do is to seek out someone in real life... perhaps a mental health therapist or a clergy person (if you are religious) & talk all of this through with them. One additional option would be to contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline:

Lifeline

1-800-273-8255

Here is a link to an article, from Psych Central's archives, that offers suggestions for surviving suicidal thoughts:

How to Survive Suicidal Thoughts

My best wishes to both you & your son.

If you fear for his life you absolutely must contact the authorities or get him into treatment. You yourself need help as well but you cant work on yourself if you are constantly worrying about your son.

I am sorry you are in such a desperate situation. I agree with the advice already given. You need help and can't handle this alone. It can be hard to find the right help and even harder to get someone else to accept help but all you can do is keep trying. Hugs.
