Been taking care of a 68 year old lady friend that has been disowned by her family because of her Bi-polar. Her own son and sister doesn't want anything do with her. She was married too her husband for 45 years before he died of cancer in 2013. After her husband died she quit taking her medicine but now she taking it because I make her take it because I couldn't live with her. She's on a great new medicine called Latuda 40 mgs for last 4 months her physiatrist put her on. Even with her taking this medicine she still has mood swings. But not as bad.
Thanks for the help. |

Hello Billybob: This appears to be your introductory post here on PC. So... welcome to Psych Central.
Here are links to 6 articles, from Psych Central's archives. The first 2 links are to articles on the subject of bipolar disorder in general. The next 4 links are to articles that talk about how to help a loved one or partner cope with bipolar disorder. (Based on what you wrote, it doesn't sound as though "loved one or partner" describes your relationship. However, hopefully, some of the suggestions in these articles may still be of benefit.) And then there is a 7th link which is to a blog, here on PC, titled "Getting Older with Bipolar": Bipolar Disorder: Symptoms, Types & Treatments | Psych Central Frequently Asked Questions about Bipolar Disorder | Psych Central 8 Ways to Help Your Bipolar Loved One Cope Helping Your Partner Manage Bipolar Disorder Bipolar Disorder: Helping Your Loved One Manage a Manic Episode https://psychcentral.com/blog/10-tip...ipolar-person/ https://blogs.psychcentral.com/older-bipolar/ I hope you find PC to be of benefit. __________________ "I may be older but I am not wise / I'm still a child's grown-up disguise / and I never can tell you what you want to know / You will find out as you go." Thanks for the welcome.
I've been taking care of her for almost four years and it's really hard at times. She hear's voices and see died people. But not all the time. |

Hi Billybob59. Welcome to Psych Central. I am sorry you have to endure the swings and challenges of mental health in your friend.
If it is possible you may want to share with the psychiatrist about them hearing voices and hallucinating. This sounds like the medicine they are on is not keeping them stable. The psychiatrist also may need to reevaluate the diagnosis based on this info you shared. __________________ Super Moderator Community Support Team "Things Take Time" |
