One of the most annoying things about living with a narcisist is that they have to outcompete everything I say. If I say "I'm tired because I got up early." They have to instantly say "I got up earlier."

If say I had a long day, they insist their day was longer. If I stayed up half the night working, they insist that they stayed up later. They can't ever just let you say anything in passing without devaluing your experiences by saying they had a bigger, longer, more significant version of that experience.

I'm trying to forget about the last incident, but it's annoying the heck out of my while try to work.

Does anyone else know someone like that?

Yes. My mom, also a narcissist, does this all the time. Mostly when I say my back hurts. Hers always hurts more. Or she's had her pain longer. She can't just acknowledge that I'm 36 and already had a fusion of part of my spine and that my back does indeed hurt.

Thanks for sharing @childofchaos831. Your mom sounds just like my sister. It's as if they think everything in your life exists only to compete with them or no one else but them is entitled to feel tired or sick.

Because it's all about THEM and never about YOU. You're not allowed to suffer or have issues, only they can. You're not allowed to gain or be the center of attention, only they can. The world revolves around the narc, and the narc is the center of the universe. All things lead back to the narc needing attention.

It’s definitely annoying. It’s definitely a red flag. I usually just stop trying to talk with anybody that does this. They aren’t somebody who will ever listen.

Thanks everyone for the input. I have to try to remember it is their problem. One thing that annoys me is that whenever anyone is sick, they have to bring up the one UTI they had years ago. I did sort of wonder if they might be autistic and that it may be what an autistic person considers sociable conversation to always say they have it worse than you.

I can absolutely relate. Indeed it is all about their issues, whatver you are struggling with, they will insist to be struggling harder. I couldn't deal with this for longer, so I left and as hard as that is, I'd tell everybody who is suffering in these circumstances to also consider leaving. For your own sake and sanity. All the best to you :-)
