Our beloved Blue Rhoan Spaniel had to be put to sleep after a short battle with terminal cancer. Jack was diagnosed with bowel cancer last November, but he grew so weak that our biggest love for him was to let him go.

Can't stop crying. :'(

I am so sorry for your loss. Jack was a beautiful boy! There is a lot of depth in those eyes! I admire you for choosing to not let him suffer longer...a hard choice but the right one. Peace to you. I hope he is now running and barking freely somewhere out there in a new realm. Universal speed to Jack

I experienced this myself a few months ago, it's such a hard thing to do even when you can see how your beloved little friend's quality of life is being significantly challenged and their health is failing them badly and there is nothing you can do anymore that can stop this.

Thank you so much all of you for sharing on my topic. It has been very difficult, particularly Peggy my daughter as we were with our doggy Jack when he died. It was brave of us, I know, but especially Peggy. Our beloved pet passed away with dignity.

We are having Jack cremated, so can go to one of his favourite walk areas. We may leave it for a little while though, until Peggy feels the right time has come. We have taken time off work, Peggy her schooling for needing a few days' respite.

Now we are having to go through all the hard places that bereavement brings. It is something that has to be done, for we are human after all.

Once again, thank you for helping me live through this difficult time.

Love,

Velvet Lounger

My condolences on your loss. We have a small poodle / schnauzer mix (a Schnoodle.) He's around 14 years old now (we estimate) & has kidney disease. He's doing well now. But we know the time is coming. Here are links to 4 articles, from PC's archives, on grieving the loss of a pet:

My best wishes to you...

Special thanks to you, Skeezyks, for those helpful links! I have bookmarked them for Peggy, so together we can read and help each other come to terms with the loss of Jack.

I'm saddened for your own loss. Every pet is always special; I like to believe there is a place for them in the next life and we meet them again.

And thanks to everyone who have posted. You have been tremendously supportive to us.

Just to recap.

I know all too well that there was a fine line when it comes to grief. If you ignore it, it goes away, but then it always comes back when you least expect it. If you let it stay, if you make a place for it in your life, it gets too comfortable and it never leaves. It was best to treat grief like a guest. You acknowledge it, you cater to it, then you send it on its way.

When the time is right, we will get another dog. Or, like cats sometimes do, it may come into our lives like a stray, choosing us. Who knows?

I saw this quote and found it helpful so thought I would share:

"Grief never ends, but it changes. It's a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness, nor a lack of faith. It is the price of love."

I’m so sorry for your loss, sweety
Losing a pet/family member is never easy, but I’ve learned that the best thing you can do is to remember all the wonderful times you two shared, and to celebrate those amazing memories. 💕 every one grieves differently, so if anyone ever tries to tell you to “get over it already” it’s probably best to just stay away from that toxic behavior. When the time comes for you to let go of that grief, then it’ll be on your time, not anyone else’s.

I'm so sorry. I've been through this too and know how painful it is. I really like what you said about treating grief like a guest, and how that's done. We ended up adopting a dog nearly a year to the day after our beloved black lab died (this was nearly 9 years ago). While I still miss our K, I'm so thankful our current pup made her way into our lives. The heart has room for so much love.

So sorry for your loss. My fur babies are family, and it breaks my heart when someone looses something so precious.
