A few docs mentioned ativan or valium. And I don't think many docs combine 2 different benzos at a low dose. The klonopin helps but isn't that potent. I'm afraid my doc will just up my dose to 2mg daily. Should I stay with klonopin? I've been on it for years now.

If you have been on it for years and taking it everyday it probably isn't doing much of anything for your anxiety. I chose to taper off my meds ( and am getting near the end) rather than keep increasing the dose and just feeding the habituation . My doc said with my increasing age I will eventually have to come off the ativan and the Ambien would need cut way down. I have cut my benzo
down 70% and my ambien down to 50-75%.4 days a week I take 5 mg of ambien the other three 10 mg. My goal is to be at 5 mg of ambien each night for a week by May 18th. I have logged my progress in the "getting of ambien" thread. I decided to do this early on my terms when I was ready rather than when he thought the risk of falling was too high. I actually feel better and definitely have been more productive. My memory is so much better. Hope all goes, well for you. __________________ True happiness comes not when we get rid of all our problems, but when we change our relationship to them, when we see our problems as a potential source of awakening, opportunities to practice patience and learn.~Richard Carlson |

benzodiazepines are not the best things to take long term. Not a problem for some people, but...the longer one stays on them, the more problems can pop up, the more difficult it can be to quit, etc.
having said that, if you -need- a benzodiazepine, my personal, non-professional, just some person on the 'net advice would be to ask about Valium. it doesn't cause depression as much as Klonopin does, and its easier to taper than Ativan or Klonopin. |

If you do choose to stop taking it, you will have to be careful and taper down slowly. I hear coming off benzos can be a *****.

Benzodiazepines aren't so bad with a sloooooww diazepam taper. I have found the Ambien more difficult and had to go back on a diazepam taper so I could sleep some and it did help. I am just about off the diazepam taper- maybe one more week to ten days.
Ambien reduced by 65%. I will not put myself through this again. I had days I felt like crap and did not like me; not sure those are behind me totally. I will see over the next two months. __________________ True happiness comes not when we get rid of all our problems, but when we change our relationship to them, when we see our problems as a potential source of awakening, opportunities to practice patience and learn.~Richard Carlson |

You have some tolerance built up clonazepam is one of the most potent long acting benzo out there. The only thing comparable would be switching to xanax which you really don't want to do. Like mentioned earlier a slow valuim taper would be your best bet to get off of benzo's entirely.

hi. valium is more sedating. there's actually a lot of benzodiazepines on the market...I think serax is a popular one in Europe thats still on the market here...
but, yeah. Valium is less potent, so it requires more mgs to get the job done, which means more sedation. on the plus side, it acts quickly and lasts a long time, and tapers are easier than Klonopin or xanax. there is a xanax xr. i dont know anything about it, except its generic and I think its 1 pill in the morning. xanax is unusual in that its been used to help depression with and without antidepressants, so...maybe the xr is worth asking about? other than that...there's Tranxene, but I think that's used more in rehab and alcoholism treatment... sorry about your struggles. |

I think it might be best to get off benzos altogether and try some other means to help your anxiety. One person in my support group told me lavender supplements work really well. In any case, do it with the help of your doctor and taper slowly.
