Is it possible to gain weight on a med when there is no change in your appetite and you are eating the same amount?
I’ve gained 4 pounds in 2 days but I’m watching what I’m eating and my appetite is the same and I have no trouble controlling my hunger. I started a new birth control on Tuesday but it’s still the same brand just a different generic. So I’m assuming it’s the same thing and I shouldn’t have any new side effects? I’m just wondering why my weight would go up if I’m eating the same amount and moving around more then I usually do? I’ve heard of rapid weight gain from meds like lexapro, zyprexa and risperdal, but again don’t you have to actually be consuming a ton of calories to gain all that weight? |

Absolutely yes. I weighed 107lbs.when I started taking Seroquel. I'm 5'6", so I was underweight. The Seroquel did increase my appetite somewhat; still, I have always eaten healthy food. I am not a junk food person. I'm not a "foodie", so it's not like I ever binge on food or anything.
About a year into Seroquel I had gained a fair amount of weight. I sold my car and bicycled everywhere...work, stores, etc. Did that for 6 months. Normally, I would have lost so much weight, I would have had to eat high-calorie foods to gain some. On the Seroquel I didn't lose a single pound, even with the daily miles of cycling. 3 years after being on Seroquel I had gained 110 lbs. Pretty shocking and the weight gain concerns me because of associated health issues. My pdoc acknowledges my concern, but says, "Hmm, yeah...that is a problem with the AP's...." Not that I blame her at all. It is discouraging, though. |

So even though my appetite is the same (I don’t eat much at all) I can still gain weight from this?
And if it’s the same brand but a different genric, isn’t that the same thing I’ve been taking for years that has caused no issues in the past? |

And I calculate exactly. So I know I rarely eat more then 1,300 calories a day.
I’m really concerned about this. |

Well, everyone is different. Some people don't gain at all on Seroquel. Many people gain only a few pounds. For myself, I have wondered if, because I was underweight, my body kind-of over-reacted to the Seroquel and packed on weight. I have never even heard of anyone gaining like I have on ANY medication. It's weird. As for generic...I think it's the same, yes. |

I gained a lot on psych meds too but my appetite was always through the roof. That’s why I’m confused with this weight gain.
I also did a lot of exercise as well these past couple days. Which never works out well for me so maybe that’s part of it. |

The weight gain aspect of psych meds is outrageous. I mean, I would think researchers would find out how to create meds that do not cause weight gain by now.

My weight went back down. I must have retained water because of all the walking I did this weekend. My moms weight went up as well but it’s also back to what it was before the walking.
I’m pretty sure there’s no way in hell I can gain weight without eating more calories then I burn. It’s simply not how things work. |

I gained weight as well. I couldn’t figure it out either. It was really frustrating.

If the birth control pill is the only one that has changed - from branded to generic then see what happens if you go back on the branded one. Good Luck.

Honestly, now I’m wondering if it’s causing a decrease in my appetite. I can barely eat anymore and the weight is just pouring off me. I know some meds can do this. I’ve never heard of birth control doing it. I’m struggling with eating yet I just had a small salad and a couple slices of a mini pizza. I don’t feel particularly anxious, and I feel fine physically. I really don’t know.

Unexplained weight loss can be caused by something physical. Have you spoken with your doctor and discussed the issue? Have you had your thyroid levels checked?

I was 3 pounds less then I was on Wednesday. Today I ended up leaving work and going to immediate care who then sent me to the hospital because of severe pain. I have a possibly kidney stone. I hope it’s just a kidney stone. Loss of appetite, unusual weight loss, and pain makes me worried about cancer or something.

Yes, I’m no expert but I’ve read it’s called “metabolic syndrome.”
I take a cocktail of bipolar meds and weight-gainers are a no-go for me. That and daytime sedation. I’ll try a med with those potential side effects, but draw the line there. And akathesia, of course. *shudders* |

I know it is common with AAPs....I take Geodon and haven’t gained weigh, but my pdoc still has me weigh-in every month and takes my waist measurement, as well as calculating my BMI.
He will flat out refuse to prescribe Zyprexa to any of his patients, he said...apparently 100 lb gains are common! I had decent luck with Abilify being weight-neutral, but the side effects were very heavy. I did take Lithium years back, a horrible mixed episode ... I gained forty pounds, it got off it when the episode went away and was able to lose the weight. I think it stinks we have to worry about getting Type 2 diabetes with some AAPs... (On meds but not loving Big Pharma) |
