I've been taking Gabapentin (Neurontin) for abut five years. I'm a recovering AA so my psych said this would be a better route as it'n not addicting. After a few years, I realized I was using the pills as a "high". That is, I was seeing Gabapentin as recreational, I guess. At first it was great as it calmed down my thinking and anxiety. Anyway, I guess it's time to say goodbye to it. I have been taking 5 pills daily (2000 mg) as prescribed. My plan is to g oto 4 pills for a week or two, then 3, etc etc.......I feel good about my decision but know it will not be a picnic.

hi. i don't know much about gabapentin tapers. have you checked out websites, like surviving antidepressants and others, where people who have tapered might be able to share their success stories and tapering schedules with you? just a thought. also...i know everyone says this, and its not always possible, but...try to work with the prescriber, if possible.

I was recently put on Gabapentin, 900mg. I hated the way I felt. In addition to feeling extremely sedated (all I wanted to do was sleep) I felt very angry ALL of the time. I have bipolar disorder and the Gabapentin seemed to cause me to have manic symptoms (such as, extreme irritability).
Anyway, I insisted to my pdoc that I wanted to decrease my dose. I had been pon 900mg for only a month. I dropped the dose down to 300mg and I sure felt withdrawal. For 3 days I felt nauseous and unwell. I definitely recognized the way I felt as withdrawal. After a few days I felt much better.

So. I suggest that you decrease your dosage slowly, since you've been on the med for 5 years. Maybe even go for a 2-week stretch instead of 1 week?

I'm currently tapering Gabapentin and am dropping 100 mg every 4 weeks so not to experience such drastic withdrawal symptoms. I was taking it for neurological pain but I have since had surgery and am no longer in pain so it's time for me to come off it.

I was told by my pdoc that withdrawing from Gabapentin is equivalent to withdrawing from an opioid thus the need for my lengthy taper.
