Since we are all anonymous on here, my inner journalist has been curious to know if any other females have experienced their monthly cycles stopping due to thier medication??
I was put on risperidone as I expressed my dismay to the drowsiness and weight gain I was suffering from a different AP. And i found that my cycle was non existent after five months. So my doctor suggested adding on Aripiprazole as it can help the prolactin level go back to normal. But the risperidone just did not suit me and one AP is bad enough, nevermind two. So I returned to my old faithful AP - ket.
Does your cycle stop with any other drug? Would you be willing to stick with a drug that left you unable to have children? And is it ok to be pregnant and still be on an AP??

Hand up here. Risperidone totally messed up my menstrual cycle, and caused me to lactate, which I actually considered to be the bigger problem. With the risperidone, I'd go months between periods.

All that not withstanding, I decided to stay on it, as it's one of my better meds in terms of effectiveness.

As for being on an AP while pregnant I don't really know anything about it. I never wanted children.

Thanks for coming forward splitimage. I thought it could not be that rare of an occurrence. I personally would not stay on the risperidone even if it worked. But If it is the best drug you have tried and suits you then I could see me considering the quandary if nothing else was working.
What really irks me is that if a doctor believed it was the only drug that was working, they could put me on a Cto against my will for non compliance if I refused to take the drugs even if I contested that I may want children in the futue. I cannot adopt after being in hospital after all. I would then need to get a lawyer to fight my case and I do not think I would usurp the power to decide over a psychiatrist. I am aware that if some people saw my diagnosis they would whisper that I should not have kids since my condition is partly genetic. I would say they may as well go and get a swastika tattooed on their arm. Hitler actually sent mental patients to camps to die as well as Jewish people. A doctor instead of putting mental health on my sick note for the job centre, put my official diagnosis and the advisor said I could not possibly work if I had that. But they are wrong. People with my condition can have a good career and a good life. All you have to do is forget the label and press on.
But I am speaking hypothetically as I am on Seroquel. Thank goodness my brain responds well to it. I take an anti-d alongside it and I am fine and symptom free.
