I'm worried , even taking a low dose of Abilify, 2mg. Long term effects.
Are antipsychotics the only meds that can cause this? |

Not everyone gets weight gain and diabetes from anti-psychotics. I took 10 mg of Abilify for a couple of years, and I don't have diabetes. Don't assume you're going to get every side effect out there. Meds work differently for different people.

I read somewhere that some antipsychotics can cause diabetes for some people after just two weeks of taking them. I’ve never gotten type 2 from anything but lithium caused diabetes insipidus. It went away a couple years after I went off lithium.

Yes, side effects vary broadly. For some people, anti-psychotics can cause weight gain which in turn can lead to diabetes. But it does not happen to everyone and is not inevitable. I did not have that issue on Abilify.

I am now insulin dependent. I now take Abilify and it does not seem to aggrivate my diabetes. It took me about a month on Seroquel to develop diabetes. No weight gain either.

My doctor said Abilify is one of the ones that is friendlier towards us in regards to getting diabetes. I happen to take risperdal and have diabetes. I started taking after I got diabetes and it does not elevate my sugar. There is a warning about it for some people have problems with it but not me.
