I have a big conundrum. Seroquel is the only med that works for me but I gain too much weight on it. I have gone off and on it many times over the years because of the weight gain. I even take Metformin but it isn’t helping. I have gain 80 pounds and I can’t stand it. So need to choose between sanity and my weight.

Tried both geodon and ability multiple times. They don’t work.

some of the older tranquilizers are surprisingly -not- terrible...the real problem is that docs tended to use massive doses back in the day. anyway...
there's perphenazine (trilafon), which compared well with the 'atypicals' in a huge study back in...2005, maybe? it proved -almost- as effective as zyprexa, minimal weight gain. loxapine...kinda hard to fill an rx for loxapine, but...if you keep the dosage low, brain scans show it actually has an atypical-ish profile, less weight gain. amoxapine...is technically a tca antidepressant, but it partly metabolizes to loxapine. some psychiatrists regard it as particularly effective for psychotic depression. when and if it works for an individual, it tends to alleviate some symptoms quickly, 2 weeks or less. some very small studies showed comparable control of Schizophrenic problems vs risperidone or haldol, with more robust improvements in anxiety and depression. i think its easier to find a pharmacy that stocks amoxapine than loxapine. the new d2 partial agonists...rexulti, vraylar. $$$, but i think they don't cause weight gain like seroquel. have you talked to the prescriber about the metformin dosage? there's an xr i think...maybe a switch to that might help? sorry about your situation. |

I've been using Seroquel for years it's the one thing, at least since I've tried nothing else, that helps me sleep. I am having weight problems though and I wonder if thats one of the reasons?! Does that "Geo" med or Abilify act similiarly as a mood stabilizer? I am also on Vraylar which, without insurance, is very expensive.

Yes Abilify is an antipsychotic, works good for stability or boosting an antidepressant. Seroquel raises your triglycerides making you crave junk foods or food in general, also causing diabetes. I personally hate seroquel but it does work, Haldol has been a game changer for me along with my Lamictal, weight about the same. I consider myself “hard to treat”, Tegretol worked great for me and also doubles as a nerve pain medication (my back) but I was getting toxic doses and came off. If it wasn’t for the hair loss, I’d probably still be on Depakote, worked pretty well. |

I have been on and off Seroquel about 5 times. We go off because of weight gain but then end up back on it because nothing else works. I am the heaviest I have ever been. It is so depressing. I get out of breath just walking to my car. Unfortunately I can’t take antidepressants so we have to get creative with my treatment. I am finishing up a course of ketamine so maybe I will be able to come off it soon.

I know exactly how you feel. Seroquel is the only drug that really helps me sleep, lowers my anxiety and helps me be more emotionally stable. I have gained 50 pounds since I began treatment this summer. i have stopped it twice before because of the weight gain. However, this time I want to stay on it because it works so well. I have been trying to do 30 minutes of exercise per day and try to control my eating as much as possible. If you set a goal of just losing 0.5 pounds a week, eventually you will make progress by making baby steps.

I have Schizoaffective Disorder and PTSD with Dissociative Features and the Seroquel wasn't helping me other than with sleep, it actually made my mind foggier plus it made me gain more weight.
So my current Psychiatrist switched to me to Rexulti which has helped me a lot it's a newer medication. I'm also on the shot for Abilify once per month which by itself wasn't helping enough. Since the pills used to help the Psychiatrist switched me to the shot before giving up on it entirely since the pills weren't working as well since the shot can work better. No one else including other Psychiatrists had told me about the shot or the Rexulti although the Rexulti was pretty new while I was still seeing other Psychiatrists based on what this one has told me. But the shot for Abilify had been around longer than the Rexulti. A Nurse gives it to me monthly and the Psychiatrist said depending on how well the Rexulti works I might be able to go off the shot eventually but I'm nervous about that. I'm also on Lithium as a mood stabilizer and Lexapro as an anti-depressant, as well as Trazodone for sleep and a high blood pressure med that they use sometimes for nightmares. But the Rexulti is the same type of medication as Seroquel and Abilify. So anyway maybe you could ask your prescriber about Rexulti. I don't know whether or not it would work for you and I'm not a medical professional. Even with the professionals helping, it can be trial and error sometimes. I hope this message helps and that you find something that works well for you. |

Another reason I take an anti-depressant is because I have OCD symptoms and other anxiety issues. I forgot to mention that.
