the new prescriber person has decided to prescribe me 20mgs/daily Prozac. ahhh, Prozac...the most (in)famous antidepressant, ever. anyway...

anyone have experiences to share? It turns out...a lot of my "lingering psychosis" is really just really, really, really (no, really) bad anxiety, complete with 'obessive traits' (thankfully, -not- full on OCD...that looks rough), so my mind has been looping on things.

i've only been on it a bit less than a week, and...OK, I think this is a mind thing, as in I'm -doing something- about it, so I feel better...but I do feel a good bit calmer and better able to just carry on, on a day to day basis.

i also take abilify. id kinda like to see about lowering the abilify a tad, since Prozac apparently makes blood levels go up a good bit, but...you know how psychiatrists are...you have to make them think its -their- idea to adjust something.

other than that, its just vitamins and very low dose gabapentin, strictly as needed. i think im doing surprisingly well...

so, again: anyone with Prozac stories to share? Thanks. :-)

Made me manic as hell, then mixed, then psychotic. Fun times. However I was also abusing the Prozac to get that high so I was not taking my AP or MS. With one on board I might do better on it. If it’s helping, that’s a good thing. And yeah, maybe you can go down on abilify. I wouldn’t try that though until you are sure the Prozac doesn’t send you up too far.

I have never tried it, still_crazy, so unfortunately I don't have a lot of advice to give to you or experiences to share to you! I completely agree with what wildflowerchild25 has already wisely said better than I ever could! I'd suggest to listen to her as much as you possibly CAN if you want to! SHE GAVE YOU SOME TRULY GREAT, KIND, WISE AND WONDERFUL ADVICE AND SUGGESTIONS BETTER THAN I EVER COULD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!!! I want to wish you THE BEST OF LUCK with your new meds!!!!! I hope they'll work out for you! If they don't I'd suggest to talk to your Pdoc about this and see how it goes from there ESPECIALLY if there are ANY problems that arise! Maybe that could help! Hopefully he'll listen to what you have to say and understand you! He's there to help you after all!!!!! Just be careful and try to see if there are ANY side effects that are proving to be too troublesome for you, ok? We want you to GET BETTER and to STAY SAFE as much as you possibly CAN!!!!! Do you have a support system IRL? Any friends or family member that may be able to help you and that you may reach out to? I CERTAINLY hope so!!!!! PLEASE LET US KNOW!!!!! Perhaps you may ask them to assist you and to "check out" on you if there are ANY problems that arise!!!!! Hopefully they'll able to help you one way or another!!!!! Please STAY SAFE and take GREAT CARE of yourself, ok? Of course we'll ALWAYS be here for you as well! YOU CAN ALWAYS COUNT ON US! I PROMISE YOU THAT!!!!! PLEASE REMEMBER ALL OF THAT!!!!! Sending many hugs to you, still_crazy!!!!!

hi. thanks for the input.

i do have some people in my life, thankfully. if i got too out of it, they'd definitely let me know. thanks for asking, btw.

ive heard that some people go manic on it. the psychiatrist said i needed something that would help the anxiety and also be on the more 'activating' end of things, as ssri drugs go. celexa and paxil were just too, too calming and numbing for me.

i guess ill just stick with the abilify where it is, currently. i tolerate it well, and the dose isn't maxed out or anything, so i think (hope...) it'll be OK. i'll ask the psychiatrist at the next appointment.

thanks again. :-)

I'm on abilify, Prozac, and tegretol for bipolar. I'm also presently in my worst depression ever. I took Prozac for a monopolar depression diagnosis ages ago but it made me manic and I lost my job, and insurance, then Prozac.

I've been on Prozac for @ 20 years and have had excellent results from it. I never knew what it was like to feel good until I started on that medication. I have never taken any other antidepressant medication. It took about 2 weeks to kick in, and actually I forgot that I was taking it until I suddenly realized that I wasn't depressed. I was like, "Something's wrong! I'm not depressed! Hallelujah!" Suddenly realized my new medication must have taken hold. My doses have gone up and down over the years as various crises came and went.

Only now, after @ 20 years, am I attempting to wean myself off Prozac entirely. This has nothing to do with Prozac, just my belief that at this point in my life, for a number of reasons, I can get along without it. I no longer need the help from it I have had and am going to try to handle things cold turkey.

I've had no adverse effects from it. The only effects to report are that it took my body a little bit of time to adjust to it, metabolically. I got a little frazzled to begin with and lost a few pounds. My mouth was dry for a bit. But those effects quickly wore off, and the drug has done wonders for me ever since. I wish you luck with it.

thanks. i wasn't excited about an ssri, but...wellbutrin helped lift my mood, but did nothing for looping thoughts and anxiety, so...prozac it is, basically.

i wish you well in going on with life, without the Prozac.

I was on Prozac for a few years and it worked well for me for depression. It quit working after a while so I switched to something else. Good luck with it!

Prozac kept me from getting a full education; I don't have a high school diploma.

Prozac made me all agitated. I felt like I wanted to rip my skin off. I spent hours rocking in corners of the room, biting and scratching myself, because it was the only thing that would soothe me for any amount of time.

have never taken it but I will relate a story ... we all know a med may or may not cause someone to act out or change their temperment or lose there judgement ... however the only (to my knowledge) mass shooting in our city was from a man on prozac ... just a thought ...

I havent taken Prozac but my Pdoc was planning to put me on it as well if I didnt improve. I went too far down and off my meds and into the alcohol and ended up IP in a diff. hospital for a month before she could though. But she said she has had great results with it and she has a lot of experience with Bipolar pts. I am thinking of going back to her soon and will possibly see if she still thinks I should try it as Im still on the depressed end of things after being back on meds for 5wks.

As always everyone reacts to different meds differently anyways. I had horrendous experiences with mirtazapine and especially citalopram(had SI and HI) while my dad takes citalopram for his and it is great for him.

I think the more important part is probably the meds that keep the AD effects under control though. I wasnt on any mood stabilizer or AP with those meds and I went super manic on Wellbutrin alone but tolerate it well when Im on other meds.

Its great that you recognize the possibility of the lift you feel being from doing something to improve. That happens to me all the time and yet every time Im like "Im all better!" Haha the pdoc this time was like ya but we will still keep you until that is sustained and sure enough a couple days later I was right back at the bottom and Im still not doing that great weeks later.

I really hope this med works out for you!

Prozac made me everything you can possible think of. Depressed, manic, mixed, psychotic. It was honestly a living nightmare. But you could try to go down on your abilify...eventually. I'd wait to see how you respond to prozac first. As someone else previously stated.

I've been on it for a few months and my anxiety is much more manageable. The only major side effect I've noticed is I have trouble staying asleep unless I take a sleeping pill, which isn't ideal, but the pros far outweigh the cons.

I was prescribed Prozac for a short amount of time for unipolar depression. It was awful. I couldn't sleep at all and felt like I could crawl the walls. Like being hyper but without any joy or elation. Stopped it very soon after that. I'd never take it again. Just my experience. Some other folks seem to like it.

I'm having better luck with Zoloft as far as SSRIs go.

so far, so...quite good. honestly, i think i may have been severely depressed for a while, just...with the abilify on board and ample support, i was able to kinda sorta make a go of things, more so than i would have been with less (or no) support, no tranq, etc.

its kind of circular reasoning...add an antidepressant, get better, decide 'wow, i was depressed!'...but hear me out. the mind loops aren't as horrible, i think back on things but it doesn't get as emotionally charged. sounds...like flattening, but then my mood is improved, i usually go to sleep, sleep thru the nite, and wake up ready for the next day. before...i would often go to sleep, wake up, sleep, wake up...my total might have been 6ish hours, maybe a tad more (?), but the impact was...not good. and so...

blah. at least the tranquilizer is abilify (not that its 'better,' just...if one can tolerate it, its less toxic in some ways than many options...) and the mood lifter is low/standard dose Prozac. i saw the psych today, and he seems to think this is one of the safer combinations, long term. what i dont understand is...

what gives with all the heavy, toxic drugs in psychiatry? where i go, sometimes ill hear people give their meds rundown, to a nurse or whatever. man o man. depakote and zyprexa, both at high doses. seroquel and depakote and hydroxyzine and thorazine...and im thinking...wtf? who can do much of anything on these drugs? long term...who can survive that?

ok. so, that's neither here nor there...i just find it kind of baffling that my combination is regarded (apparently) as 'clean' and 'safe,' but i suspect my lil line up is an exception to the rule, and that kinda..scares me. plus, it seems like a massive waste of resources, long term...

ill just try to be thankful, that's what i'll do. lol. seriously. given how well ive responded to good ole prozac, im wondering if the agitation and stress and sleep weirdness actually did do something to my serotonin levels. circular reasoning, again. oh well. im thankful, how 'bout that? generic tranq, generic antidepressant, lots of antioxidants...

things are good, and getting better. :-)
