I started rexulti about 2 and a half years ago and it has helped me so much, but I have gained 40 lbs while on it and it is really messing with me mentally. I'm starting to question whether I should try a new medicine and risk it not working and making me backslide, or just put up with the weight gain. Does anyone have any experience with this issue, I really don't know what to do.

Hi, moonlightbird, and welcome to Psych Central! Are you now considered obese as a result? Is your health suffering?
Thank goodness I was taken off Remeron. I gained something like 20 pounds in a matter of weeks. I think weight gain is a good reason to stop a med. What does your doctor say? |

Thank you so much Travelinglady! While my primary doctor is a little concerned of how rapidly the weight came on, my psychiatrist who prescribed it doesn't seem concerned at all.
I'm not obese thankfully, but the change of my body and not being able to fit into my clothes has made me feel more depressed at times. I was willing to put up with it at first because I thought the weight gain would stop at some point and level out, but it just keeps climbing. I'm so torn because this medicine has helped me like no other, but I'm afraid of how much more weight I'll gain. Did your weight gain ever level out or did it just keep going? |

I’ve had to stop many meds because of weight gain. It really annoys me when psychiatrists care less when clients gain weight rapidly from meds. Yet when they lose weight they automatically assume they have an ED or something.
My current doctor that I’ve had since September knows that weight gain is a big deal for me so he doesn’t really push anything on me. __________________ Ridin' with Biden |

As I recall, I was prescribed the Remeron by my rheumatologist and then had my first manic attack. A psychiatrist put me on something else.
I just kept gaining with no stopping for the time I was on it. But I was able to get the weight off afterwards. But your med might be different. I'll see what I can find out. |

This is very very common. I have gained the same and it is the source of a great deal of problems with my self-worth at times. I have considered not taking my meds but realise that I would be pretty sick and get myself into a lot of trouble if I did so. It just isn't worth it to me.

I recently came off 1500mg Depakote because of weight gain. I'm now taking Lamotrigine and Prozac.

I have stopped meds on numerous occasions due to weight gain. Eventually my pdoc got the idea
