Hi,

I was taking 175mg. per day, all at night (bipolar disorder). I've been having mixed states that are quite severe. I saw my pdoc today and she has increased my Lamictal dose to 300mg.

I totally realize that each person has his/her own med reactions, so I'm not asking for comparison's sake. I am, however, wondering if anyone here is on a high dose of Lamictal (I'm thinking that 300mg. is high?).

Also, I left my pdoc's office, came home, and realized that I had forgotten to ask her whether to take the Lamictal a.m. or p.m. (office closed for thwe day). My pharmacy is closed and I'm uncomfortable with calling an advice nurse who advises on general medicine, not psych meds.

If anyone would share you the times you take your Lamictal I would sure appreciate some direction.

Thank you Lamictal?

I took 300 mg of Lamictal in the past right at bed time

My doctor put me in the XR because I hated having to split dose morning and night.

300 is a very common dose but I have seen some people up to 500

Everyone reacts to meds differently.

Hope this new dose helps you.

Thanks so much, Christina. I appreciate your input and well wishes. I was a bit nervous, thinking that 300 was a high dose. Lamictal is a med I haven't had much experience with.

I didn't realize that Lamictal was available XR. I also dislike having to split med doses. Definitely something to keep in mind. I have my fingers crossed. xx

Well I take Epitec, I have for 3 years. I know it's probably not exactly the same but it does contain Lamictal. I was on 400mg per day, 200am and 200pm. Luckily my doctor decreased it to 200mg per day recently. I found that taking the full 200mg at once, either morning or night, would cause side affects and sometimes withdrawals by the end of the 24 hours. So I started splitting it, taking 100mg in the morning and 100mg at night (this was suggested by my doctor) and i found that it works really well. I found that this medication has been the most helpful with my Bipolar than any other medication I've taken.

Hi hotshocolate, Thank you. Interesting, about the side effects. I'm calling my pdoc today to ask her recommendation. I'm curious as to what she'll say.

Just FYI: I take Lamictal 300mg/day. I take 200mg at night and 100mg in the morning.

I know of many people taking 400mg daily, in divided doses.

As always, please check with your physician

And, Welcome to PC!!!

Thanks to each of you for sharing your experience.

I spoke with my pharmacist about how to do the dosng of my Lamictal. He was very kind, but said something I'm not sure I agree with. His recommendation was to take the 300mg before bedtime. He said his reasoning for that is so I don't forget the a.m. dose. Forgetting that a.m. dose is not something I would tend to do. It makes sense to me to split the dose with the hope of staying stable throughout the day. I might just go ahead and do the a.m./p.m. and see how that works out.
