My first ever antidepressant was Nortriptyline, a tricyclic. I took it for almost 20 years and it helped..until I fell into a deep depression at age 41 and was taken off of it. For the past ten years I've been on various med combos but just recently started taking Doxepin for insomnia and depression. After 10 years of being off of tricyclics I'm back on one and I think I'm starting to feel a lot better. I've been laughing easily which is not something that has happened in years. I don't think this class of antidepressant is used very often anymore but I think it's a good option when other classes aren't effective enough.
