(Sorry for the long post! Tl;dr at the end)
After being put on a few different meds and seeing two different doctors with very different opinions, I was at a point where I was super frustrated and didn't feel like anything was really working. My last visit, my doctor had me on 100mg lamictal with 200mg seroquel. I found myself so tired and lethargic, even when I was happy I wasn't really very happy, and it was just hard to get out of the 'fog' it put me in. So, I very slowly tapered off of the seroquel, and had some nasty withdrawal issues. Mostly nausea and dizzyness. I kept on less than 12.5mg for a few extra days and the problems got better. I found some relief! Not instant, but within two weeks of completely stopping the seroquel, the constant foggy tiredness had improved so much. I was very happy about that! Now, the second medication I was originally put on last year was prozac, and it was the only one that I actually liked. My 2nd doc took me off it because he generally refuses to let bipolar patients use antidepressants. But my mom was recently put on it, and when she didn't like it, taken back off. I had a month left of my own prescription, and she had two months left of hers. So after carefully reading up on how lamictal and prozac could interact, and assuring that our two prescriptions were really the same, I started prozac again. - Believe me, I know this was stupid, and definitely irresponsible. I recently turned 21 and started school, but there was about 2 months of lapse in my insurance coverage, so I couldn't see a new doctor. I knew I just wanted to feel the relief that I felt on prozac, and the lamictal was clearly helping keep me stable, so I thought they might just work together. Turns out - it sorta worked! Well, for the most part. I have not had significant depression or low days since about 1 week back on prozac. I have bad moods and bad days, sure, but I haven't had a true depressive episode. I also haven't had crazy or really noticeable hypomania, either. I have some really good days, but nothing like my true hypomanic episodes. I feel like I've finally found something that actually seems to work. My biggest issue I need help managing now is my anxiety, and I know I will need medication assistance because of how severe it is. If I can sort that out with a doctor, I feel really confident about my meds. My hope is that when I see a new doc or psychiatrist, they will see that I've found something that works, and let me stay on it! TL;DR - I took myself off seroquel and started prozac again without a drs advice (while waiting for my insurance to kick back in) and it seems like it worked! __________________ Control what you can | Confront what you can't.
