My Pdoc told me to take SAM-E in conjunction with my anti-depressant (Trintellix), ADHD medication (Vyvanse), and anti-psychotic (Rexulti). Does anyone have experience with SAM-E? Does it work? Side effects? It's OTC but that doesn't necessarily mean it's safe. Thanks Kit

I tried a bottle of it a few years ago. For me, it didn't seem to make a difference, but I only took it for about a month. I didn't have any side effects.

I wonder if its effectiveness all depends on your body chemistry.

Yes! It’s involved in the methylation pathway. Certain genetic mutations like the MTHFR mutation can disrupt the methylation process. The process is needed to make SAMe which is then used to make certain “happy” neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. An oral SAMe supplement bypasses the dysfunctional part of the pathway. It has helped improve my sleep, but probably not my mood. It has helped improve the mood of others, though. It also seems to have affected my TSH binding (hypoactive thyroid), so I can decrease my thyroid medication now.

Thank you. Yes my doctor is concerned about the MTHFR mutation for me. That is why he is recommending me take it. I haven't noticed any difference yet, or any side effects but it's only been two days.

Most pdocs don’t know about this. I’m glad yours is well informed.
