I’m really struggling with anxiety and depression and I’m wondering if a new med will help. I cannot gain any weight. I’m already on lamictal, Geodon, and Xanax. What can I take that won’t be counterproductive and cause me to go immediately off it the second my appetite goes up? I gain massively on basically everything.

Buspar is weight neutral. It’s for anxiety.. didn’t help me at all but it’s a miracle med for my daughter who also like me has Bipolar.

Thanks but Buspar made me eat 800 calories per meal and snack and actually getting off it was how I lost and kept off 80 pounds. And yeah it didn’t do anything for me either. I went off it basically cold turkey and on my own with no issue. I think I really am out of luck unless my doctor agrees to try welbutrin. And he has said no because it will make my anxiety worse.

I’ve had the same problem. I haven’t found anything that works.

The only med I can think of that doesn't cause weight gain are benzos. (I'm like you; I've gained weight on every psych med except Klonopin...I started out skinny & it seems like my body overcompensates.)

Maybe your doses of current medications need adjusting ??

Gabapentin is sometimes used for anxiety but i did gain while I was in it.

Why is your Pdoc against an AD?? It it a concern due to maybe causing a manic episode ?

I take Wellbutrin and it hasn't made my anxiety any worse. It's very dependent on the individual how they will react to any particular medication. I hope you can work something out with your doctor.

Hey @Mountaindewed
I was wondering what dose of lamictal you take? Sometimes you need a higher dose of that for the mood stabilization benefits kick in.

Escitalopram I have found helps with anxiety and actually kills my appetite so I lose weight.

I was wondering what dose of Buspar is your daughter taking? I am going to my Doctor on tomorrow to discuss being put on that in addition to my Wellbutrin. If you can share that would be great, in research it seems like for it to be effective it needs to be a higher dose...???

Thanks!
