In 2 days I'm seeing a psychiatrist but I'm watching video after video of horrifying side effects of antipsychotic meds but I'm wondering if even antidepressants are also bad. People saying they lost intelligence, their mind. Permanently! One guy saying it was like he got a lobotomy, & he's off his meds!! So even after his meds he never gained back his mind?

I feel like I'm on the verge of having a serious panic attack. My psychologist has strongly encouraged me to seeing a psychiatrist.

I don't know what to do. I understand everyone reacts differently. I guess most people don't lose their mind or intelligence or feel like they had a lobotomy, but what if I'm one of those people?

I would appreciate any help what I should do. I feel like my psychologist is concerned about the voices I hear & my delusional beliefs, but I can get myself to forget about my delusional beliefs, and in the past the voices have always faded away if I push them away & not talk to the voices. So my concern is intense 24/7 anxiety & depression. I want a antidepressant but I'm afraid there's also the possibility of it permanently taking away my mind. I don't see as many bad videos about antidepressants but maybe they're just as bad.

Here's the video that just scared me to pieces, if anyone's interested in watching it. The video is bad, but some of the comments are terrifying.

Life After Psych Drugs: Will Your Intelligence Return?
YouTube

and another, not as scary:

When will you feel like yourself again after coming off psych drugs?

Thanks, I appreciate any help!

Maybe ask for a medicine that has little to no side effects

Everyone reacts differently to medications.

Most Pdocs start a person on a medication at lowest dose and you see how it’s working for you and your particular symptoms. If it’s not helping after a reasonable amount of time then your Pdoc will increase dose and again a reasonable amount of time is needed to see if it will help. Then maybe move onto another medication.

It can be aggravating at times some medications might have side effects you just can’t tolerate..

A person truly needs to have patience when it comes to trying meds to see what helps with the symptoms and you can tolerate any possible side effects.

One thing I say right off the bat I have never met a psych med that doesn’t cause dry mouth.... so be prepared to have water handy 24/7

Here’s proof we all act differently on meds.

I have Bipolar so does my daughter, I took Lithium and at the time is really helped me find stability. She took it and couldn’t sleep and had hallucinations. She took Seroquel and literally couldn’t lift her head off her pillow, very low dose 200mg , I took 800mg and was lucky to sleep 3 hours.

So while you all over the internet reading and watch videos keep in mind we are all so totally different.

I think a lot of people complaining about antipsychotics aren’t taking them for psychosis....yes they typically cause weight gain and can rarely cause other side effects but when compared to being out of touch with reality these are typically not as bad. Keep in mind the illness itself can cause brain damage if left untreated. It’s definitely between a rock and a hard place but if you decide to take meds you’ll find more people support your choice than not. Most people who have returned from psychosis will only see the validity after a period on meds when they realize how far they were gone.

Yeah, just to add to this: my life was absolutely unmanageable and out of control without antipsychotic and antidepressant medications. Now it's manageable. Untreated psychosis is definitely bad for your brain. Not to mention your quality of life...

I just got back from the psychiatrist that my psychologist highly recommended. After 1.5 hrs of questions she wants to have yet another discussion with my psychologist and another followup before diagnosing me, but she already talked to psychologist on the phone, so I wonder what's going on.

Before followup she wants me to have a physical exam, neurological exam, EKG and a whole slew of other stuff I don't understand:

"CBC idp(?), CMP, TSH, T3 Typmee(?), RPR, HRV, Fasting, lypid panel, HgA1C"

Is it common for a psychiatrist to require that many tests? I think it's great that she's so concerned but I'm concerned something's wrong.

It’s a high quality of care, mine wanted an mri and bloodwork....I got a neuro exam and eeg like five years later, they also do thyroid etc because there are physical things that can cause hallucinations .........honestly this is the best possible outcome from an initial consult

Thanks. That's amazing your doc also wanted an mri. I'd probably freak out if she said mri lol. I think that's one of those machines that pulls you in a tunnel and you can't move a muscle.

Turns out I didn’t need it because I had just had a CT, another faster version of those tube machines....

Yes your Pdoc is being a great provider ... before any psych meds all possible health problems should be ruled out. It’s sad so many providers don’t do this first.

All the testing is going to show her your baseline physical health. So then you and her can start to work on your psych health
