I started Zyprexa over the summer and it increasingly made me ravenously hungry, particularly at night. I've gained quite a few pounds because of this.

My doctor has put me on an appetite suppressant which is helping a little although i'm sure I gained more weight over the holidays.

Has anyone else experienced increased appetite with their meds and what did you do to combat this?

thanks and Happy New Year!

Ceara

I gained weight so fast on Zyprexa it was scary. I told my pdoc that I refuse to continue taking it. And I stopped.

I will happily eat dirt and rocks on Zyprexa, if you let me. Abilify has been weight-neutral for me for years.

Plant based with minimal carbs...ie carbs from protein sources like beans not bread....plus exercise....I used to walk 2 miles a day it’s not that much but I’ve gained like 15 pounds after stopping the exercise...trying to restart now.

I take Zyprexa and the only thing that helps is exercise. I eat a ton.

Interesting, for me, Prozac & Welbutrin (along with stress) triggered me into massive weight loss & anorexia.

Interesting how different meds effect people so differently

Yes, and I'm now attempting intermittent fasting. It's been about 4 days now and my appetite is less...even when I eat less. Too early to tell if I've lost weight yet though...plus, I don't have daily access to a scale. But you can try it too and we can compare...if you chose this, of course.

Here it is! Boy, am I humbled today! Said appetite was less, well damn I'm starving now!! (Its ok though. Ill be fine)Suppose it's because I'm in the fasting portion of this and when I break the fast, my appetite might suppress. But I will only know for sure when I go back to my regular diet again whether I've conquered the problem...
It has been suggested to me that I consult with my doctor about this goal, so you ought to do the same if you chose this path. Good luck! Time to go eat now!

Thanks to everyone for all the responses. I bought a lot of fruit Saturday and hope this will help with the cravings. I would rather stay on the Zyprexa if possible because I have no other side effects besides the increased appetite with this drug.

I don’t know what appetite suppressant your doctor has you on but many people are put on Metforum which is a medication many diabetics take.

It either helps or it doesn’t. In my case it was just constant diarrhea so I stopped it.

I loath Big Pharma. I’m sorry Weight neutral meds could be developed but the same companies that make Psych drugs also sell medications that will take care of diabetes or high blood pressure, heart disease etc caused by the stupid psych meds themselves that cause crazy weight gain. It’s a win win for them.

I’ve never been on zyprexa but my doctor put me on Visteral a couple weeks ago. In 2 weeks I’ve gained 20 pounds and I’m eating so much to the point of feeling sick. I’m thinking of just throwing the med in the garbage.

Unfortunately in your case it’s caused weight gain for most people it’s given to help them sleep or anxiety.

Do report this to your Pdoc.

No munchies last night! Yeah! I avoided anything sweet tasting which can cause appetite increases, too. I just drank unsweetened chamomile tea and had no cravings at all.

My Pdoc put me on an appetite suppressant rather than take me off the Zyprexa, and this has decreased the munchies. I have still been getting them but not over-the-top munchies like I got before the appetite suppressant. (Once I ate an entire pumpkin pie!)

I did just end up throwing the pills in the garbage this morning. My weight gain is causing a lot of physical pain along with self esteem issues. So far I’ve barely eaten anything today and my anxiety is ok. I take Xanax too. And I take topamax twice a day.

Rexulti has been really bad for me. It constantly makes me hungry. I switched to taking it at night so that the hunger pangs wouldn't be so bad, but every so often I am still ravenous. I've gained so much weight on this medication. =(

Bad news ,Eli Llily makes Zyprexxa ,ring any bells? They make and sell insulin ...
Why does insulin cost diabetics over $1000 a month ,it is a hormone discovered over 100 years ago ,it's never been patented by anyone ,and you can buy imported insulin from Europe and save yourself a 1 or 2 bucks they are gouging people why because they can !
Also of intrest Zyprexxa was rushed to market in the 90's they wanted to be the 1st atypical antipsychotic ,to do that they lied and withheld all the side effects they new about , the whole black box warning of metabolic problems , diabetes, cardiac problems ,heart attacks, was all known about Zyprexxa for more than 20 yeears before it became a patented drug ,after all of the deaths and diabetes, Doctors started to believe that Lilly's claims of its a "miracle drug " doesn't matter what's wrong with the patient this will be good candy to give them was realy bad, so there was suspicion but nothing that could be proven ,until 8 whistleblowers came forward from Lilly with 1000's of internal documents showing Llily new all of this for years ,they also new if the FDA was told the drug wouldn't be approved as safe for anything , but if it came out after approval they would just get a black box warning and a slap on the hand ,it was all about the Benjamin's, it's still a best selling drug ,making tons of money ,what they paid out to victims and fines was pennies and for the company a profitable gamble .

Anyway I could go on on about bug Pharma's scams and epidemics caused by its greed. Another memorable Llily miracle drug that has proven to be garbage & ironically now mixed and sold in one pill with Zyprexxa is Prozac ,I can't think of its patented name but most doctors will not prescribe it , it's cheaper to give generic versions in two pills ,and they know it .just like Silenor was recently patented for sleep disorders ,doctors who know there medicine know its original name was Doxepin an anti depprsant that never worked for deppresion , however they found out later it improved sleep architecture, so about 2 years ago it was repatented ,you can spend 100's buying Silenor or grab the generic doxepin for about $30 a month supply . ( why Silenor as a patent name ? The company executives were at a holiday party and heard "silent night" playing and it inspired them ).i wish I was kidding ,but am not .

I know to much ,it's not healthy ,and i know it despite a brain injury from resuscitation during cardiac arrest ,that's scary , some bells can never be un rung once you know its in there for good .

Yes this is why I loathe Big Pharma ! Nothing shocks me about them anymore which is sad .. but true
