Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has had any experiences of Clomipramine to help depression and OCD? I was prescribed this a few days back by my psychiatric doctor. Bearing in mind I have had Insomnia bad this past month having come off Mirtazpine because I couldn't sleep. I had a bout of Insomnia earlier this week and then immediately after taking the first dose of Clomipramine on Tuesday I didn't sleep at all from 10pm that night to the following morning. The next night I got an hours sleep before being awake from 11pm through to the following morning. Last night I reluctantly took a sleeping tablet and did sleep for a few hours and then tossed and turned rest of the night. But then my OCD mind is going overboard with stores of people sleep walking whilst on sleeping tablets!
During the day I am very very tired, not eating much and generally becoming quite reclusive due to having no energy and my OCD mind playing tricks on me. Has anyone got any advice, just at my wits end. Supposed to be going on holiday with my parents to Tenerife on Wed but looks like the holiday may get cancelled now as I'm not well enough.

Sorry to hear this. One thing that comes to mind is a possible genetic interaction. Clomipramine is metabolized in a big way by a pathway called CYP 2D6. Some people have genetic variations that affect the efficacy of this pathway. I am considered a poor metabolizer because I inherited non-active forms of this pathway from both parents. This means that I have a really high chance of experiencing negative side effects from Clomipramine because my body can’t break it down correctly. My OCD sucks and has not responded to other treatments, but Clomipramine still isn’t a good option for me to try. It’s possible you could be having a similar issue.
