I wasn't sure which forum to post this in. The getting off meds forum seemed pretty inactive, a lot of the posts were made in 2019.

My psychiatrist said that being on antidepressants too long can sometimes destabilize a person.

So me and him decided for me to get off my antidepressant by taking less of it and eventually not taking it at all. The medication is Celexa.

I'm a little scared because the last time I tried to be without a antidepressant, I got suicidal thoughts constantly.

So my question was, has anyone had this happen before? A psychiatrist saying that being on antidepressants too long can destabilize a person. Then suggesting to try being off the antidepressant?

I searched on Google and couldn't find anything about this being true. Or anyone else experiencing that.

Thanks in advance.

Also today is the day I am off the antidepressant. After taking a lowered dose all last week.

No I haven't heard that but I choose to go off of antidepressants a few years ago. I'm still depressed. But I was depressed on meds too. I decided to do cognitive therapy. I had never tried it before but it seems to work for me.

My life has been hard. I think most of my depression is related to Complex PTSD. I have used radical acceptance and other tools to cope. I accept my depression. I've never attempted suicide. I've thought about it but rejected it as an option. In part because it is very hard to do. I realised I don't really want to do it. I have a few, very few, people who care about me and it would devastate them.

I'm not unkind to myself. I give more self affirmations. I accept bad days. Acceptances the key for me. I keep busy and I have hobbies that soothe me like painting. I'm grateful for what I have and I try to be appreciative of my good qualities.

I have some health issues and for me reducing the amount of medication I take seemed like a good idea.

Update:

I'm doing better now that I'm completely off the antidepressant. So I suppose my psychiatrist was right that it can destabilize a person.

I have never heard about your Doctors claims ?!?!

One think I just want to tell you is all meds have what’s called a “ half-life” it means just because you stopped taking it daily pill doesn’t mean it’s out of your system. You also need to understand you brain needs time to go back to functioning sans meds and that can be weeks to a month or more.

I quit lithium years ago ,, it literally took 3 months for my body to work all the kinks out. It was unpleasant to say the least.

Good luck
