Just wondering about folks' experience with this. Was on it for a long time many moons ago, but was recently on Provigil for like, ten years or something. Anyhow, had to d/c that due to a bizarre side effect and now may at some point have to go on Adderall again, if I cannot get some daytime wakefulness and some energy. Appreciate any input. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was always under the impression that adderall is for adhd and not for diet or wakefulness, has this changed?

Certainly have no knowledge about diet stuff. But as for the other, yes, I think it has. Quite a few pdocs use it in trement-resistant depression and for the central fatigue that so often cripples patients suffering from that, as the only other options really are Provigil/Nuvigil. My preference personally is Provigil, but I now have a weird side effect and can no longer take it. Hence, the post.

It has always made me extremely angry that so many psychiatrists do not seem willing or interested in helping patients with badass depression to deal with anhedonia, amotivation, and the utter and complete absence of an ability to even get off the couch. So angry, when there are clear options available. Inmy opinion, this is gutless and basically, malpractice. Just my own admittedly, strongly held view.

My insurance would not approve Nuvigil or Provigil. So my pdoc went with Focalin. I was on tegretol and couldn’t stay awake for days but Focalin did the trick. Eventually when I stopped tegretol I stopped the Focalin. I wish I hadn’t because not being in able to stay awake landed me in the hospital.

Huh, not heard of Focalin before. BTW, just in case it ever comes up again, Provigil is about $25 a month with the GoodRx card, so, not so bad.

I take Adderall for wakefulness. But not for depression, I take it for narcolepsy. My neurologist started me on Provigil and it wasn't enough to keep me awake, so we moved to Adderall. Another option that is used for narcolepsy is Xyrem but I admit I don't know anything about it really, just the name.

The Adderall does keep me awake. I'm still adjusting my dose to find what's right. I'm getting tired too early in the day, even though I'm not falling asleep.

Good that it is helping. Do you mind sharing your dose, by chance? I am on 20 long-acting in the morning only. It is really helping a lot.

20 mg in the morning of the regular Adderall, not extended release or anything, plus 5 mg in the middle of the day at the moment. Not really sure the 5 is doing much, but 10 kept me up too late.

I was put on concerta for the lack of energy throughout the day due to the severe depression. I've found it helpful so far.

Awesome Einstein quote. My kitten I named Albert.
Great that you have done well with Concerta. Not tried that one. I have tried Provigil, Nuvigil, Ritalin, and Adderall. My fave is Provigil, but cannot take it now due to SE.

I've tried those four too. Like you, Provigil was pretty nice and worked well. But I switched to an MAOI a little over a month ago and had to switch.

Oh, wow--did not know you could take Concerta with Emsam or whatever.

Vyvanse 50mg in the morning keeps me awake nicely for 13-14 hours and it's focus lasts for 8-9 hours.

When I wake up, I take the pill, go back to sleep (Which makes me go into REM dream sleep) so I dream a lot and then I feel a sort of rejuvenation of wakefulness and movement - Like I'm able to easily move.

Cuz I have sleep inertia and hypersomnia without it. I also have wake inertia (The longer I stay awake, the harder it is to fall asleep again) and insomnia.

Concerta 2x 36mg in the morning works too but it's not as good and doesn't last as long. Vyvanse is more of a clean feeling.

I tried Adderall 20mg in the morning but it didn't wake me up so I decided to take 2x 20mg and was still sleeping + it doesn't last as long as Vyvanse. It was the generic version of Adderall not brand name.

That's just my experience.

Glad at least one of your meds is helping you, Des. For me, Provigil at the average dose is the best, it lasts maybe 12-14 hrs. or so. Adderall 20 is identical for me, long acting that is, and it lasts a bit longer. Maybe 16 hrs. or so.
