I'd like to let you all know in case anyone experiences myoclonic jerks while taking lamictal. Lamictal can cause myoclonic jerks as a side affect. It doesn't happen to everyone. Not all cases are the same. I've been taking lamictal for 12 years. The myoclonic jerks didnt appear until 2012. I didn't really notice them much. I was distracted by the neurodegenerative side effects that had become more noticeable at the time. Luckily I was able to convince my neurologist that it was a side affect so she lowered the dose from 250 twice daily to 200 twice daily. Ever since then (until about 4 months ago) the effects had subsided. Once I started having seizures again (about 4 months ago) my neurologist upped it back to 250 twice daily. That's when I realized that lamictal was causing not only the jerks but all of the neurodegenerative side effects had returned but worse. I know lamictal is the cause because I went from having minimal mental degenerative effects and no more than 2 jerks per day (only when resting-sitting with legs elevated) to having at least 2 jerks approximately every 2 to 5 minutes. Most started within a few minutes following taking the new dose. I experimented by going back to 200 twice daily and the jerks decreased to at least a few per day and all of the neurodegenerative side effects had gone back to the previous state (nock on wood). P.S. just because someone has a PHD and decades of experience doesn't mean they everything relating to their field of study, especially when it comes to prescriptions. The neurologist that lowered my dose in 2012 aurgued that none of the symptoms I was experiencing were related. I believe an eeg is what changed her mind. Don't remember (memory isn't all that great).

Also does anyone on here have any experience with using cannabis to treat epilepsy? I'm concerned that both keppra and lamictal might have caused permanent reproductive issues.
Thanks

Hello Tuner: Thank you for sharing your experiences. None of this is anything I can really comment on. (Perhaps there will be other PC members who will have some experiences of their own they can share.) However I noticed this is your first post here on PC. So I thought I would at least say welcome to Psych Central. I hope you find PC to be of benefit.

Hi, Tuner, and welcome to Psych Central! After taking Lamictal for years, I started having trouble walking and had other strange muscle effects such as a droopy eyelid. My primary care doc told me that I likely had a build-up of Lamictal in my body. since it does that. I went off Lamical and my symptoms quickly went away. I've refused to take it again. I didn't have the jerks, but they make sense given my symptoms.

I don't know the answer to your second question, but maybe someone will have ideas.

Again, welcome! I hope you'll find us helpful!
