Hi, all! New to the forum here. I was recently diagnosed with cyclothymia and prescribed lithium while weaning off my Cymbalta and Wellbutrin. I was curious if any of you are familiar with the guidelines regarding drinking alcohol (obviously not in excess) and taking lithium. Can you drink at all? Or should it be completely avoided?
Thanks, guys! |

Hello ICURN: I see this is your first post here on PC. Welcome to Psych Central.
Not being a mental health professional, I can't suggest anything authoritative with regard to your question. However my personal, non-professional understanding has always been one should not drink alcoholic beverages at all when one is on psychiatric medications of any kind. Perhaps other PC members will yet have other thoughts on the subject though. I hope you find PC to be of benefit. |

That's a good question for your doctor. In my opinion I would not mix the two. I once got dehydrated and went toxic on lithium and ended up in the ER with kidney failure. Alcohol dehydrates you so if it were me I would avoid the two of them together. But again I am not a doctor just speaking from past experiences.

Thank you, guys, for the insight! My doctor did say moderation is OK as long as you hydrate well. Just wanted to run it by folks who have more experience on it than me. Thanks again!

if your doctor said it's okay I guess that is fine then. 1 thing I will say is lithium is notoriously hard on your liver as it is. If you don't get your liver enzymes checked regularly regardless of drinking you should consider it. And if you drink regularly it's even more important to do so.
