Question Oct 07, 2020 at 09:36 AM

Hello All,
I am diagnosed with ADHD , anxiety and depression- previously bipolar but I think I was misdiagnosed.
I took antipsychotics for awhile and went off of them last year because I was getting worse.

I’m doing pretty good with my regime now but occasionally when a lot of stress hits or I’m triggered I get anxious and sometimes neurotic and I can’t overcome the feelings easily.
Do any of you take a low dose of seroquel or other AP
occasionally when you have breakdowns ?
I don’t know what else to try but I don’t want to get back on them as a daily thing ...

First off, welcome to Psych Central! I used to take a low dose of Seroquel as needed and it seemed to help but moreso for anxiety versus other kinds of breakdowns. Now I am taking a different AP (Geodon) as a daily thing. I understand not wanting to be on daily meds but for some people in some situations it is helpful. At any rate I think taking a low dose as needed is something worth discussing with a doctor.

The last time I was in a psych hospital, they prescribed 25 mg of seroquel as a PRN. I found it helpful, but it made me very sleepy.

I now take it regularly, at a higher dose, as part of my daily meds.

Occasional Seroquel use?

The lower the dose the sleepier you will be. Higher doses are used for daily treatment purposes. I forget why that is.

Seroquel acts like an antihistamine at lower dosages. So it makes you sleepy

I take 400mg of Seroquel every day but if I do have severe anxiety, agitation, psychosis, etc I can take another 50mg up to 3x a day. I find the PRN use helps. I'm thinking of getting off the 400mg and just taking it PRN since I'm already on other meds.
