Has anyone been successful coming out all your meds and starting over? I have never heard of a dr allowing that without being in the hospital. I also have heard the withdraw is awful.

The are many factors that combine to decide whether you need to be in hospital or not. Doing it slowly with the doctors knowledge seems to be the way to go.

A quick withdrawal from all meds at once can throw a person into psychosis - witnessed this personally when my husband went into kidney failure and they did dialysis. He never had issues of psychosis until that event - never again since. It was terrifying. If you are on significant numbers and/or doses of meds, this needs to be done slowly and with a doctor's knowledge in case things go awry.

I weened off my bipolar meds a year ago. The ones they were giving me were not working. I waited about 8 months to make the decision that I needed something. I did not drop them abruptly though. Depending on the meds, that can be dangerous.

I used to be on four psych meds. Im now on one and a lot better for it. I did it extremely gradually and this was after a number of failed attempts where I ended up breaking down and being put on higher doses because medical staff wouldn't accept it was a temporary psychotic state brought on by withdrawal. Its all taken a toll on my body and I'm just resting at the moment for some months or longer because I think my Cns needs a break..
I would never recommend suddenly stopping because of my experiences although some people do so and survive. |

Many decades ago pysch patients were often given routine "med breaks." The breaks were done IP, when patients used to be IP for months at a time. The med breaks were seldom successful, so the practice of doing them stopped.
It seems to me that if someone wants to take a break from meds maybe decreasing the dose and seeing how that goes is a better idea than stopping altogether. __________________ |
