The Denial of Trauma

The psychological definition of trauma is “damage to the psyche that occurs as a result of a distressing event or an overwhelming amount of stress that exceeds the ability of the individual to cope and integrate the emotions involved.” This definition often gets simplified into the dictionary definition of “a deeply disturbing or distressing event,” which is where we all get a little lost. It’s very easy to understand trauma as something horrific, like war, or mass violence, or a natural disaster. It’s the “exceeding ability to cope and integrate emotions” section that gets lost on us.

———————

We need to get rid of the view that trauma is an action (an event). The more psychology tells us about trauma, the more it becomes clear that trauma is a reaction. Most importantly, it is an individual reaction.
Very, very exceedingly helpful.

How they mess with clients:
Belief may not move mountains but it can certainly produce a powerful psychological, and sometimes even physical, cure. It's been found that believing whether an antidepressant will work for you is the most important aspect of whether it will or not!(1)
And more research found that depression is essentially made up of negative expectations about the future.(2)
Therapists of all flavours should, I think, be expert in subtly garnering, building and focusing the hope of their clients and in this week's Clear Thinking 'How To Help Your Clients Believe They WILL Get Better' I will give you three strategies to do just that.
Here's to the future,
Mark

Believable.

If the guy can't handle being asked personal questions, I think he should be looking for a new profession instead of writing articles.

Some of these therapists are nuts.

Maybe a bit tangential, but I really enjoyed Carolyn Spring's latest blog

Healing A Damaged Self

Not sure if this blog has been posted before but damn does he hit my issues with attachment, transference and desperate inner child needs from the therapist.

__________________
When a child’s emotional needs are not met and a child is repeatedly hurt and abused, this deeply and profoundly affects the child’s development. Wanting those unmet childhood needs in adulthood. Looking for safety, protection, being cherished and loved can often be normal unmet needs in childhood, and the survivor searches for these in other adults. This can be where survivors search for mother and father figures. Transference issues in counseling can occur and this is normal for childhood abuse survivors.

I find it funny how therapist make themselves so important. In the second article Diane talks about a client who found the therapy so threatening he used to take his glasses off to keep her face a blur.
Wtf, maybe he was shortsighted and didn’t need them. Don’t know why but I wanted to punch her after reading this
