Hi everyone,

My apologies if this has been discussed before, but just curious if you have songs that speak to you regarding therapy or your journey. I just started therapy about a month ago (I finally won the therapist lottery after two bad ones!), and I have a playlist I listen to on the way to therapy or when things get bad. (I was abused in childhood and just now, 15 years later, dealing with it.) Below are a few of the songs I've had on repeat and the reasons why.

1) I just found Dar Williams' "What do you hear in these sounds"--song is directly about therapy. I LOVE the line "oh how I learned to love others when I got to talk about myself.

2) Mika's "Happy Ending" has been on constant repeat for weeks. Sad song not at all about a happy ending, talks about this being the hardest story I've ever told, no love no glory, happy ending gone forever." Really applicable to me in putting a painful childhood to rest.

3) Cage the Elephant's "Telescope"--talks about a guy on the other side of the telescope who looks like me, but keeps himself locked up, afraid of what the future might hold--main chorus is "you don't understand, walls keep tumbling down."

4) "Where do you go to my Lovely" from Darjeeling Limited soundtrack. Lovely little song, I like the main chorus of "where do you go to my lovely, when you're alone in your bed. Tell me the thoughts that surround you, I want to look inside your head." This is repeated a few times in the verses, then the final verse is "I know where you go to my lovely, because I can see inside your head"--I listen to this a lot on the way home from therapy.

Night on Bald Mountain
Danse Macabre
Send in the Clowns
Toccata and Fugue in D minor
And O Fortuna (carmina burana) = my ring tone for the woman.

I have also considered Candide to be appropriate for the absurdity that is therapy.

I have a lots.

Read myself of therapy playlist.

Breathing Underwater by Emeli Sandé is my hope song. Where I want to be.

Then there are several that just remind me of something my therapist would say.

There Isn't One Way By Patti Griffin
Brave by Sara Bareilles

Rise Up, Andra Day : because at times it was only the thought of seeing my therapist that could get me out of bed.:'(

Going Back To My Roots, by Synapson.

And recently, for fun a little song called Lil Mama because even though it sounds silly it's about making time for someone who is struggling and down.

Wilco's 'Please Be Patient With Me' is applicable to every aspect of my therapy journey. It contains everything I want to say to R, and the rest of the world.

'My blessings get so blurred, at the sound of your words
I'm gonna need you to be patient with me...'

Then there's John Prine's 'Bruised Orange':

'You can gaze out the window
Get mad and get madder
Throw your hands in the air, say 'What does it matter?'
But it don't do no good to get angry, so help me, I know.'

I never click on random YouTube links (i like to be informed!), but for some reason I did...never heard of this song/band, but it is a good jam to have in therapy

In similiar vein, my choice would be U2-Walk On

Quote:
And if your glass heart should crack
And if for a second you turn back,
Oh no, be strong
Walk on
Walk on
Stay safe tonight

Bed of Roses . (To me, this is about acceptance of life as it is in reality instead fighting against it. Something I had to learn. Life is so much easier since I learned to "sigh" and just be okay with where life has taken me. When I stopped fighting against it, I realized my life now is pretty darned blessed.)

YouTube

Long, long ago, where the tall grass grows
And the still air is sweet with summer flowers;
In the shade by the stream I would lie awake and dream,
And in dreaming I would while away the hours

Long, long gone yesterday,
And the castle and the prince and the God to whom I prayed
Well, I made, and I'm gonna lie in this bed of roses
I'm tired of trying to be free
Gonna lay down like a sigh in my bed of roses
Bed of roses I believed my life would be

Well, I wasted years,
All the useless, bitter tears
If I'd known I'd have stopped it at the start
I knew life was long,
And I knew life could go wrong,
But I never knew my life would break my heart

Dreams die harder than pride
I have learned my lesson well
I will put them both aside
'cause I made and I'm gonna lie in this bed of roses
I'm tired and I'm dying to be free
Gonna lay down like a sigh in my bed of roses
Bed of roses I believed my life would be

Roses die, and all the fairy tales are lies,
And I guess that's just too bad for poor old me
'cause I made, and I'm gonna lie in my bed of roses
Bed of roses I believed my life would be
Bed of roses I believed my life would be

most songs by Tool have been pretty inspirational for me in regards to therapy and my journey. my favourite being 'forty six & 2':

My shadow's shedding skin and
I've been picking Scabs again
I'm down, digging through my old muscles
Looking for a clue
I've been crawling on my belly
Clearing out what could've been
I've been wallowing in my own confused
And insecure Delusions
For a piece to cross me over
Or a word to guide me in
I wanna feel the changes coming down
I wanna know what I've been hiding

In my shadow
My shadow
Change is coming through my shadow
In my shadow
Shedding skin
I've been picking
My scabs again

I've been crawling on my belly
Clearing out what could've been
I've been wallowing in my own chaotic
And insecure delusions
I wanna feel the change consume me
Feel the outside turning in
I wanna feel the metamorphosis and
Cleansing I've endured within
In my shadow
My shadow
Change is coming, now is my time
Listen to my muscle memory
Contemplate what I've been clinging to
Forty-six and two ahead of me

I choose to live and to
Grow, take and give and to
Move, learn and love and to
Cry, kill and die and to
Be paranoid and to
Lie, hate and fear and to
Do what it takes to move through
I choose to live and to
Lie, kill and give and to
Die, learn and love and to
Do what it takes to step through
See my shadow changing
Stretching up and over me
Soften this old armor
Hoping I can clear the way
By stepping through my shadow
Coming out the other side
Step into the shadow
Stretching up and over me
