Today I’m having my first appointment with a psychologist. I don’t know exactly why I want to see her in addition to my DBT T. When I first started with DBT T, I don’t think I gave her a super good chance because I was hesitant of her age and experience. However, I have grown to trust her and she is not freaked out by anything I talk about (of course that doesn’t mean I still don’t filter a bunch tho). I was on the waiting list for this psychologist and she has an opening now, so I thought I’d check it out. Part of me is still hesitant with DBT T... I think I’m afraid of growing attached to her, so I have the urge to spread my support, so I don’t feel too “close” to her. I don’t know if this is the right reason to see two Ts. Maybe I also feel like no one can compare to my ex T and I’m looking for someone whose style feels similar. I want to work through my attachment issues but I don’t know if DBT T would be able to handle that. The psychologist specializes in trauma.

I find that a psychologist with a PhD, as opposed to the masters level therapists is by far superior in terms of dealing with complex issues. Hope you have a good visit!

Hope it goes well! Current T is a psychologist (as is ex-MC)—they just have a bit different and more extensive training in theory than, say, a clinical social worker (which ex-T was). But so much of it is about personality and fit rather than degree.
