Default Ifs

Emdr T wants to start doing the basics of Ifs. We have talked a lot about it so I am willing to give it a try. It seems wonky to me. I cant imagine being able to talk to the parts. She mentioned some people assign a different chair to each part. I get the concepts of different parts. But I dont consider them as seperate. So if anybody has worked with IFS I would love to hear opinions

I like my parts work; though it is not IFS and getting my parts to talk to each other has been much more organic than having them sit in different chairs. I also rarely can call a part forward or ask it to step aside. Feel free to ask me anything or pm me about it.

My ex-T tried to do this with me. I gave it a few sessions, but then called it quits. I don’t believe in the concept. Pretending to have these parts, giving them made up names, and pretending they are talking to each other felt stupid and useless. It felt like it was undermining my intelligence while trying to arbitrarily simplify my complex and nuanced inferiority into easily definable “parts.” I know others enjoy doing this and find it helpful, but it just didn’t fit for me.

I started with IFS work and it was somewhat helpful but I really need to feel a connection in therapy and I didn't with straight IFS so T modified it. Its more conceptual in our work now. We discuss my "parts" but do not try to interact with them much in session. I do some on my own but, for me anyway, just talking things through works better.

The plan as I understand it is get the parts to get the protective parts to stap back so that wer can get to the cold part that is hurt and carrying pain. Once we can do that then we would switch to Emdr without.me disassociating.

Thank you for your input. I told her that it all seemed weird and crazy. She agreed it does sound very wonky. Ther estu she explained it is that I often feel like a child when my depression really hits. I want people to take care of me and love me.m, I want to be rescued. However, I know that I am an adult with resposibilities, very independant and fully able to care for my self. Or even when I want to do something but s part of me holds me back out of fest.
