I haven't posted here in a while. I've been through a lot of therapists because I'm complicated
My current therapist is pretty good. I've been with him since November, which is relatively long for me. I googled him after realizing he doesn't live in the same state as me (however, he is still licensed here). From there I fell into a pit of questions, more googling, and found out that he has worked for 3 therapeutic schools with abuse allegations. Here is what I can gather: They were therapeutic schools, so I do understand that there will always be unhappy reviews I have not seen him directly implicated and there is nothing derogatory on his licenses He was a therapist at one school for a relatively long time and was promoted to a business management position, then suddenly moved states to work in clinical at another school for about 3 years, then worked in clinical for the last school for 1 year. After that he moved back to his home state to take his current job (in a non-therapeutic higher end private school) Like I said I haven't seen anything directly implicating him, but most of the information I've found doesn't name anyone specifically. My biggest concern is that all of these schools are related to the CEDU "cult" or at least the principals of it. I believe he was employed after the CEDU (whatever it was) shut down, but if the schools are still running my guess is they still use the same principals. I haven't read very deep into it, but I'm understandably concerned. It's shady to say the least. I do fully understand that any therapeutic institution will have bad reviews and I do understand that my therapist perhaps didn't share those views and that is why he's moved jobs so many times. I also trust in how my therapist is today. He has been very patient, kind, understanding. He hasn't pressured me or made me feel bad. The only questionable thing was a horrific (for me) moment when he emotionally leg swept me. I understand why he did it, but looking back on that moment I wonder if it was something he regularly did with youth at the schools he worked for. Honestly I don't know why I'm posting this. I'm concerned and curious. I'm reluctant to trust him now, despite having a good relationship before I learned about his past. If anyone else uses online therapy and thinks this may be their therapist, I'd love to chat. If you google him, I have no doubt you will be able to identify him based on this information. |

If he is helpful to you, you may want to bring up what you learned on the internet about him.
Why did he leg sweep you? That is using martial arts on you. If he did it for no reason, I think he might be dangerous. I'd look for someone else. |

I would bring it up with him., but one thing I will say to anyone is to always listen to your gut feeling.
I hadn't heard of the CEDU schools, but they have closed from what I read on google. __________________ "Love, like life, flows Through the heart. Feel the thrill of the flow And say nothing." |

Yes the ones in California closed. The ones in Idaho closed and reopened. Another one is in another state, but I looks the founder of that school has connections with the CEDU.
I'm scared to ask him about it directly! I'd have to admit I googled him. However, this came up with just a quick search. I suppose it would have come up if I was simply checking his license or reviews. I also suspect that it is a sore spot for him. Either because he didn't like his experience or has to defend it. |

Talk to him about it. You'll know what to do based on how open and frank he is about his connection to these schools.
He may have very well moved to disconnect himself from those organizations when he saw what was going on. My husband's doctor left the original practice where we met him because he saw shady dealings going on by the head physician/owner of the practice. He was very open with us about the situation when we moved with him to his private practice. Sometimes, until you are working in an organization, you do not see the problems with it. They are good at hiding the bad from the public and even prospective employees. |

That is a really good point. I hope based on how he moved geographically that it was an attempt to get away from association with it too. We had discussed one of the moves (just in terms of the state) and he said he didn't want to move, but had to for work.
That being said. I also posted this on reddit, in the group where i found most of this info and have had 2 responses identifying him. |

Therapists are a dime a dozen, so I would wonder why you want to bother dealing with this issue at all?
The group he worked for is a cult; it is an off-shoot of the defunct Synanon, which was a pretty well known West Coast outfit that was active in the 60's & 70's as a drug rehab program that eventually promoted itself as a religion and finally went bankrupt. It was always a controversial group, but those were the days of many controversial therapeutic methods. I'm confused: if he's in a different state from you, and you're doing therapy on-line, how did he do a martial arts move on you??? CEDU was forced to close a few of their schools, which is probably why he moved around, but the fact that he joined CEDU schools in other locations, I find troubling. These outfits incorporate in the particular states that they do because they go where regulations are weak. It's like the credit card companies work out of Delaware because the regulatory system is advantageous. I would wonder about the school that employs him now. Private schools are, again, not subject to the same degree of oversight in many cases that public schools are. That can be good or bad, but it makes me wonder about his choice of employment. I also don't understand why he's providing on-line therapy to out of state clients: again, regulation is weak, but that is an acknowledged bad practice. The large on-line therapy providers have been forced to discontinue this practice as inherently unethical and problematic liability-wise. Ethical practitioners don't make this sort of pattern of decisions. |

I think OP may be using the term emotional leg sweep as an analogy, and they are not referring to an actual physical martial arts move.

Have no clue what that would be. Doesn't sound good.
