That have been in therapy?

How many people do you know that have been in therapy for years?

I ask because I see this used to back up people's views and I think, blimey, is the UK different. I don't know another living soul whose been in therapy.
Is in therapy, let alone able to know Soneone or many someone's that have been in therapy for years who I then feel qualified enough to discribe their inner lifes as unchanged.

I must live a secluded life.

Or maybe I just don't throw unfounded statements around to look qialified/justified/superior.

Dunno. Maybe it's just me 🤷*

I am sure I am scewed because I work in the mental health field. When T passed away I found out through social media how many people I knew that also saw her through the years. Again because of my work people often tell me they are looking for a therapist or a new one and looking to me fir suggestions.

I think it is a lot more than many people realize.

I am in the UK and I know around eight people (excluding colleagues who are counsellors themselves and presumably have been in therapy at some point) who have accessed therapy. I don't know many people, but the ones I do know are wacky woo woo oopsy doopsy.

What's wacky woo? You mean people that have had difficulties, in their life?

I know three people who have done long-term therapy besides myself, and probably 9-10 who have done short-term therapy for things like grief counseling and chemical dependency. I also know a few people who take psychiatric medications but don't do talk therapy.

Of course these are just the ones I know about, I probably have some casual acquaintances who don't share that info with me.

My Mom went to therapy for a few years and so did a friend of mine. Most people I know IRL haven't been to Therapy or at least haven't talked to me about it. I know my five closest IRL friends haven't been in therapy. I'm the odd one out.

I am in the USA and I have only recently become friends with one person who I met at my last IP hospitalization that was my first roommate who is in therapy like myself. I suppose all the other girls or at least most of them were also in some sort of therapy as well, but only me and my first roomie connected for me to call her my friend as we exchange contact information before she was D/C. Other than that I no no other person.

I think I’ve known around a dozen over the years who were in therapy. Some quite long term, so more like half a year or so.

I know my younger sister was/is in therapy. My older sister's sister in law has been in long-term therapy. My grandma tried therapy for my dad, but it didn't work out. I don't know many people... Oh, and my maternal grandmother had ECT.

Yes, I would say probably 6-8 of those dozen-ish I can think of off the top of my head we’re in therapy for the long-term.

I'm thinking there could be a 2 different outcomes/experiences here.
I'm thinking mainly people who have sought out private therapy over here. Not crisis NHS attendees.
I can see there might be different outcomes/experiences there.

I remember having to seea psychiatrist yrs back. I sat in the waiting room that was filled with what could be described as outing out bpd patients.
I remember thinking I was in the wrong place.
My experience with psychiatrists is very negative. Not one good thing to say about that.

When I found my private practise T, it suddenly all fitted into place for me.

I know many. I highly recommend joining a support group. Also, visit your local mental health association or organisation. Meet people just like you.

My precise phrase was "wacky woo woo", but let's not split woos. I mean those amongst us whose thoughts and feelings don't quite fit and for whom seeking a sense of belonging in unusual places becomes necessary. Wacky woo woo, basic lingo, dood.

i know about 8 personally who have been in therapy and of those 8 three were long term and two of the long termers i consider my closest mates (next to hubby). this is probably because i have been able to have many conversations with those mates about our long term therapies and our issues openly and honestly. it's definitely about sharing a commonality and and knowing that these two can understand unlike many other people in my life who haven't had a similar experience.

I know many people who have been or are in therapy. Family, friends, coworkers etc

I have family in UK and know other people there because of it: friends of family. Attending therapy is common there too.

The reason you might not know that people have been in therapy because it’s quite private. Not something people announce. Personally I only ever shared it with family, and not even everyone in a family, just few people. I am pretty private.

I am also selective on who I tell. Some of my good friends and coworkers know but neither of my siblings know not most of my husband's siblings.

I agree. It's a private thing. I am fairly certain there are many more people in therapy than I have ever been made aware of. The few I know of are people, over many years, that I've know quite well. Not really that many considering how long therapy has been on my radar and how old I am. I'm guessing there are many more but it isn't a light topic of conversation.

Yeah. I think the thread is moving away a bit. In as much as I'm not bothered about being others irl who are in therapy.
I just get suspicious of those that use that to ban up their bias around therapy.

But like "I'm not racist, I've got a black friend" type of thing ie, I know therapy is useless because I knife others... Blah blah.

Anyways. Just curious,
