Couch 203: The Spam and Cool Whip Couch!

We don’t have the old Couches hauled off. We put them on the porch so it looks like we live in a frat house in a student ghetto.

All the advice here is not to leave pets behind. If it is not safe for you, it is not safe for your pet. And since I have no confidence this cat is housetrained, nor do I know how long I will be away (last time it was literally weeks before they would even allow people to re-enter), and even longer before power was back on, I don't think I can leave him at my place. Even if he is housetrained, from what I read, cats don't like to go in litter boxes that haven't been scooped in days - and I won't be there to do it. If he isn't housetrained, that would be a nightmare. My house is a wreck since I have not finished unpacking things and there are half unpacked boxes and bags scattered all around. The last thing I need is to come back and have cat urine and feces as an overlay to the existing squalor. Plus when the power most likely goes out, the smell from waste products will become even worse due to the heat and humidity. Even a litterbox would probably smell pretty awful, but if the cat just went somewhere else and it was left to marinate for who knows how long... well, the smell on my return is too much to contemplate.

Also, the therapist refused to take the cat even though her dog wants one.

I had an old school friend I was hoping might volunteer if I posted to Facebook, but I looked and she just acquired her fourth cat. At least my instincts were right about how much she loves cats.

The cat is in the house at the moment. Might keep inside all night and see if the litterbox gets used... or not - so I can at least advise anybody willing to house.

Trying to imagine what Spam and Cool Whip will smell like after a week on the porch in the sun....

Almost certainly better than beer, puke, and bodily fluids.

The cat seems content. I created a little habitat so s/he would be able to stay above the floor for the night (and thus at a comfortable remove from the dogs). I set up my ironing board by two bookshelves in my room. I haven't unpacked stuff to put on one of them, so I put my soft robe on the top shelf in case that would be appealing. There are also two other shelves, and the top, of course, if s/he feels my chihuahua is too close when he is on the end of the bed. On the other bookshelf is a water bowl and a food bowl. On one side of the ironing board is the box of kitty litter. I went outside and got some dirt and rocks from just outside the hole to underneath the house where the cat goes. I read that putting dirt and stuff can guide a non-housetrained outdoors cat to use the box. I figured maybe the cat would have marked his/her territory at the entrance to its sad little home, and debris from this area would make the box more appealing. We shall see.

ETA: The cat just unexpectedly leapt onto the bed, which is great. I'm just not really sure what I should do with the litterbox now to insure accessibility... maybe I will put it on the floor at the end of my bed...
