We do tend to pick up speech patterns of people we spend a lot of time with. I’ve still got some of 2ex’s favorite phrases.

So do you ever find yourself talking like your therapist? Do you find it weird? effective for the person you’re talking to?

I know I picked up a couple phrases from No. 3 that people seem to like. Minor example: She’d sign scheduling emails “let me know your thoughts” and I use the phrase sometime with students, who seem to like it.

I've gone with " What a horrific thought " due to bad experiences and the horrifying thought that I would ever start talking like they did. But those are the bad ones. My good T , I don't think I've picked up on any of his speech patterns as such , although he speaks very eloquently , which I'd like to think has rubbed off on me a little.

I have deliberately tried some of the idiotic things the woman said to me on students, fully expecting them to react like I did to them -but the students seemed to respond to them. It baffles me. I would be horrified if I started saying things the woman said like I meant them.

I used the word "appropriate" far too much. I've had (former) friends role play therapist with me once they were under the influence and it wasn't a good look.

Sort of? I wish there was a more in the middle option (I know, pollsters lot).

I find myself using some of his phraseology, but I do that with other people too sometimes. It's not like I've turned into a clone.

"Best wishes" comes to mind.

But I do use his phrases.

I know I have at points. I am particularly aware of her influence when I want to be gentle towards somebody I'm talking with.

I do. Emdr T aways says "let's just name it" I have also found myself saying the same thing. As soon as it comes out of my mouth I will clarify and say that we just need to say what it is for what it is.

Not quite they same but when in situations and trying to help somebody, I will ask myself what T or Emdr T would say and go from there.

Not the first one... that would indeed be horrific. I liked some things about how my second T handled email communication. Respectful, concise, predictable, relatively formal but not stuck-up... just generally professional. I did adopt some things from his email style in my professional correspondence. I don't find it weird, it can be effective, but I notice many people email in a similar way, so it is not that special. I don't think I picked up anything I could recognize in speech, but perhaps I lost it already, it's been years since I saw a therapist.

I keep thinking about this. Yes and no? I think that my therapist and I sort of talk the same anyway, possibly because we are similar in age, education, socioeconomic status. We both appreciate a good turn of phrase. But I expect that I unconsciously borrow phrases and ideas from therapy just because we've spent quite a bit of time together.

Just don't start dressing like your therapist...

No. Maybe when I was still seeing him, but it's been ages and I'm not aware of it at least.

No not really. But I did pick up some sayings and habits from some of the drag queens on RuPauls Drag Race which always somehow ends up in conversations with my T. So I’m wonder if she just thinks I’m an asshole. I don’t dwell on it or care though. Because I kind of am one.

Hmmph. Are you implying I couldn’t rock an outfit 40 years too young for me?

Interesting thread and survey!

Yes, absolutely. While I don't agree with everything that my therapists said, I certainly agree with you about sounding like people we surround ourselves with, regardless if it is a therapist or not.

Thanks,
HD7970ghz

You could totally rock it. Whether or not you SHOULD is a whole other ball o' wax.
