Hi Community,
What labels have you accumulated whilst seeking help from the mental health community? These could be things that you were diagnosed with, misdiagnosed with, accused of having, and or thought to have. I'll start with what I recall: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (inadequate traits) Dependent Personality Disorder Borderline Personality Disorder Antisocial Personality Disorder (proven false - malicious malpractice) Histrionic Personality Disorder (because I went to ER for trauma in therapy) Avoidant Personality Disorder Paranoid Personality Disorder Generalized Anxiety Disorder Seasonal Affective Disorder Social Anxiety Disorder Cyclothymic Disorder Adjustment Disorder Bipolar Disorder Malingerer C-PTSD PTSD (And more...) The correct diagnosis' : ***Dependent Personality Disorder*** ***Avoidant Personality Disorder*** ***Generalized Anxiety Disorder*** ***Seasonal Affective Disorder*** ***Social Anxiety Disorder*** ***C-PTSD*** ***PTSD*** I often wonder why so many people with mental illness accumulate so many misdiagnosis'. Perhaps it's a sign of how fallacious the diagnostic process is? Thanks, HD7970ghz __________________ "stand for those who are forgotten - sacrifice for those who forget" "roller coasters not only go up and down - they also go in circles" "the point of therapy - is to get out of therapy" "don't put all your eggs - in one basket" "promote pleasure - prevent pain" "with change - comes loss" Last edited by HD7970GHZ; Oct 15, 2019 at 06:31 PM.. |

I've had several. My favorite was the "bulimia" that turned out to be an atypical presentation of GERD. Which you'll note isn't even a mental health problem.

That happened to me. I had an ED-NOS, which wound up just being GERD, stomach ulcers, other issues, and today, IBS. I also have a ton of polyps now that need to be removed, when I'm up for a double-endoscopy. I have PTSD, but getting any kind of medical treatment is challenging when they attribute symptoms to psychopathology of some kind, including somatoform. Shouldn't they rule out medical disorders first, and then suggest therapy later? It irks me when they do that. |

I agree with all the diagnoses I have had through the years. Each was appropriate for the time.
Not all of the diagnoses are current: Major depressive disorder Anorexia nervosa PTSD (Complex PTSD) Dissociative identity disorder |

it is for this very reason that I do NOT tell medical people all things -> especially when it comes to blaming physical issues on mental problems when there isn't an obvious answer/cause
[that and I have major trust issues] mental illness 'labels' are also viewed in my family as having something "wrong" with you, like almost worse than cancer or 'real' illnesses/diseases! so naturally, the more labels I would 'pile up' would have an adverse affect, in relation to the people in my life. |

I struggle with the same thing with my family members. They see success as "mentally healthy." They see failure as "mentally ill." They believe that "people can just snap out of it; that they are causing their own mental illness." Trust issues, yup, been there! With doctors, especially. They're not trained in diagnosing mental illness; they shouldn't be seeing that as a "differential diagnosis" immediately, without first ruling out actual medical/physiological/neurological disorders first. Good luck if you have chronic fatigue syndrome! No one knows what to believe or how to treat it. |

Oh , yes. Trust issues. I think with my Ex T , the next time he tells someone they can learn to trust again , I hope he'll see my face and that he'll be reminded that for me it isn't over.
