I just want to encourage everyone who has benefited from a psychiatrist or therapist to say "thank you" to him or her this week or the next time you see them. Everyone likes to know their work is appreciated and I think sometimes we forget that with our treatment teams. I haven't decided how to mark the occasion with my psychiatrist but I'll think of something boundary appropriate.

How would you recognize 25 years with a really good psychiatrist?

Happy that you were able to find a source of support so long!

I hate being devils advocate, but I'll be one anyways; What happens of you should lose your therapist suddenly? How might you react? I know you already know the potential dangers of therapy, but if your therapist disappears or ends treatment, that would hurt, a lot.

Have you made steps to protect yourself yet?

Thanks,
HD7970ghz

Thanks,
HD7970ghz

Honestly, I would just give the pdoc a nice card or something thanking them for what they have done for you. Just my humble opinion of course. HUGS Kit

I agree with SlumberKitty. A card that thanks them for their services and their ongoing professional care throughout the years would suffice. Sometimes a small gift that is $10 or under is okay, too, such as a keepsake coffee mug with a physician's logo on it (since your Pdoc holds an MD), or even one with a psychology symbol, or maybe even one with both, if it's not too costly. Sometimes patients spend more money on gifts, but it depends on the context, the boundaries between client and Pdoc, etc.
