Does anybody have a T that offers video counseling? Back when I started seeing EMDR she mentioned that my insurance will cover video sessions, so if we need to have them on occasion she is willow ng. We discussed this in the context of me living so far away in case of conflicts or weather issues. We have utilized it three times. Twice because while I was able to see her at our regular scheduled time, the nourish drive after conflicted with my child's award banquets. Once was because while the roads were horrible in my area the roads between her office and home where fine.

While the video sessions are not ideal they work.

Tomorrow it is predicted the roads here will be really slippery at least in my area. When she sent my appointment reminder today I told her I would be there weather permitting and she said "sounds good". If the roads are bad I want to ask her for another internet session but also feel bad doing so. Sometimes many of her local clients cancel because of the weather. Let's face it who doesnt want to get home early in bad weather and be with their family. While we have never discussed it. I doubt she will do an video appointnent if she stays home do to the roads. Just if she felt safe traveling to the office and has clients coming in.

How would you handle this? I know I would be okay skipping a week but I am much better off when we have the consistency of our appointments

If she stays home she may not be able to do it because other people will be around and she cannot ensure your privacy.

I see my T via Skype when I'm away. When he's away we just reschedule our appointments.

Oh I know I would not want to do a video session from her house. It would be awkward and her husband and child would be home.

We have Skyped a few times, once was due to weather and there have been other reasons too. For me, it is better than no session but not a patch on in-person therapy.

Do you ask to have them rather than cancelling or does your T offer them.

It sounds like your question is less about video counseling and more about wanting an appointment if the roads are bad but not wanting her to feel obligated to see you. I think you just have to ask for what you want. I don't think your T will offer you something that she doesn't want to do, and if she does, that's her problem to work on. If I were worried, I might say, "The roads are too bad to come in, but I would still like to see you via video chat. Would that be possible, or are you not able to work today due to the weather?"

I remember phoning him and cancelling due to snow in the first year of us working together and he didn't suggest skype then, so I guess he doesn't do so routinely.

Last time, which was about 18 months ago, we had already been working together a long time, and he would have known that I wouldn't do well without a session, but I honestly can't remember whether I emailed him like "I can't get over there, could we skype?" or whether I emailed him about the weather and he responded offering skype.

I don't think he would have a problem offering it directly now.

I think if you would like to have a video session, just ask if it is possible. It may not be, but you don't know until you ask. HUGS Kit
