So I had a traumatic event happen when I was a kid. It would happen repeatedly and only stopped when my abuser got older.
I won't go into detail so I don't trigger anyone. But it was physical abuse. So my question is, how would I go about asking my psychologist for PTSD testing? My current psychiatrist has never diagnosed me with it. But I feel like I might have it. Plus a therapist in the past thought I had it. But unfortunately, I couldn't see that therapist for long. Since it was for a outpatient program. I've had neuropsych testing before as well. But the questionnaires I filled out didn't really have a PTSD section. Is getting tested for PTSD the same as neuropsych testing? Or is it different? Thanks in advance. |

I am not sure that there is testing per se for PTSD like there is for other things. Does your psychiatrist do therapy with you or just provide medication? If they are just providing medication then they are treating the symptoms not the cause and having a PTSD Dx wouldn’t really change anything as the symptoms would be the same. A licensed therapist would be able to tell you if you have PTSD and should be able to Dx it. However, my T has no doubts I have PTSD but at this time the Dx on all my paperwork is listed as Adjustment Disorder with Anxiety. This is because that Dx has the least possible negative side effects should other medical professionals or insurance providers pull up my medical records.

I am a firm believer that if someone suffered trauma they have the right to say, assume or think they suffer from ptsd. I do not think someones suffering needs to be justified or validated by a professional. Of course it helps but I do not think its a must.

OP, I am unaware of a single test used to diagnose PTSD. There are a qualifiers set out in the DSM that a therapist or psychiatrist will look for over a period of time to arrive at a PTSD diagnosis: Exhibit 1.3-4, DSM-5 Diagnostic Criteria for PTSD - Trauma-Informed Care in Behavioral Health Services - NCBI Bookshelf |

There are some testing instruments that can be used, but they aren't required to diagnose PTSD. Just because they have not been administered does not mean you haven't been assessed - or even diagnosed, since lots of times they don't even tell you what they've diagnosed you with (in my experience). Anyway, testing instruments usually aren't free so your provider might not have any they use for diagnostic purposes - many don't unless they specifically specialize in diagnostic assessments or if insurance providers require specific scales or instruments be used and reported. I would just open the discussion by asking their opinion on your diagnosis or diagnoses rather than requesting specific testing.

As far as I know there is no validated standardized testing doe PTSD,
Mostly it is diagnosed by observation of behaviour PTSD as per DM has been changing over the years , it used to be much more specific and sensitive ,under older PTSD things like PTSD-CCS was a thing ,I was diagnosed with Concentration Camp Survivor Syndrome from you guessed ìt physical abuse ,and surviving a double homicide . And later sperately with ICU PTSD , those have kits been dumbed down to non specific PTSD. psychologist and T can not diagnose . |

Thank you everyone for the information. Sorry for the late reply.
The psychologist I was seeing when I made this post, ended up quitting on me. He only sent an email saying that we weren't a good fit and sent a list of other therapists to see. His list was useless too. I checked all the one's on his list and none of them took my insurance. Thanks for the help though everyone, I appreciate it. |
