Agree that “litigious America” is a stereotype, but FWIW I am American-British and grew up in the US, and have had therapy both places; more in the US, actually.

Previous therapists in the US never hugged me, so I am partly basing my opinion on those experiences, as well as extensive reading/googling on the subject of ethics codes in psychotherapy and how they came to be.

The more relevant point may actually be licensing. In the US, practicing psychotherapy requires a license. Violating a professional ethics code can lead to revocation of that license (whether or not a lawsuit is also involved). Physical touch taken too far can be an ethics violation.

In the UK, there are psychotherapy associations and ethics codes, but no licensing. You can have your professional affiliation revoked, but still be able to legally practice therapy.

People have done polls on PC before, and there are a surprising (to me) number of therapists who will hug at least some clients, even in the U.S.

When i was a phlebotomist i was trained to take arterial blood gaese from the arterial line. I was always worried i would touch the wrong thing on the mintor when i wa silencing the alsrm or forget to turn the alarms back on or leave the iv line turned off or a million other things that could go wrong but i never did so all that aniety was for nothing, well not for nothing it helped focus me in what i was doing. But i get being scared.

I have been hugged by a therapist in the united states. I don't like being hugged by strangers, but I am aware of more therapists who hug clients than don't.
I am a lawyer who sues therapists. I don't sue nearly as many of them as deserve it.
Although not over hugging one way or the other

My cats like dog treats as well. I have to crush some up so they can have some. One of them will steal the treat right out from under the dog sometimes. Then the dog stands and cries until I rescue his treat and give it back to him. The dog is 80lb and the cat is about 13lb. I have woosy dogs.

Hey couch...

I don't know how I am. My partner lost a friend to suicide this week. And my sister corroborated some abuse. T is likely not replying to both my emails, it's been several days.

I tried turning to friends... Didn't give them abuse details or details about the suicide. They got upset, I ended up having to comfort one of them when I'm already feeling terrible. I want my T.

Also, I love my friends, don't get me wrong... And I can get slightly annoyed that "depression" for some of them literally just means a sad day. I did tell one of them to seek professional help if it lasts over two weeks or she has suicidal thinking. She was alarmed that stuff could last that long, and she's never had suicidal thinking.

So a part of me is annoyed.

So I applied for a leave of absence (LOA) from work - and that is still open but I notified my manager who told me not to worry about my shifts - he'll cover everything.

SO tonight 15 minutes after I was supposed to start I got a call from one of the supervisors asking where I was. I told him and also forwarded him the email from the manager. Supervisor told me that it is in "no way your fault" Manager also apologized.

Yet, me being me still worries.

My current T hugs me and it's always with my consent. I find it very healing. My first t did the same. The difference with current t is that the hugs aren't the focus point and we talk about the need I feel. She only hugs me at the end, never mid session or when I'm distressed as that could take the focus off the therapy itself.

It's an anniversary week. I have an important meeting at work, that falls on a trigger date.
I'm waiting to hear from a publisher about a poem, but it's not looking hopeful.

Thanks for checking in.

Hugs if wanted. Anniversaries suck and I hope it is the least awful as possible.

Hugs, QuietMind...I hope you hear back from your T. When is your next session? And it's tough when you realize how some friends or family just don't get mental illness at all...

Does it bug anyone else when you're watching a cooking show and they have a big bowl of salt and they stick their raw meat juice covered fingers in it? It just seems so unhygienic and I don't even have a problem with germs or anything like that. Maybe they're editing out the part where they wash their hands.

Absolutely! I enjoy watching Jamie Oliver cook, but I don't enjoy his 'quick' handwashing.
